Onkyo TX-NR709 7.2 Channel Networked THX Receiver First Look

that we talked about not nine months ago. That's right, back in July we were touting the virtues of the NR708 and here we are doing it again. Plus, the price points haven't changed. So, new receiver, more features and same price point with a nine month...

We're shocked at how much Onkyo is giving you in the sub $900 TX-NR709. We expect 3D and many of the features but not all of them. We can honestly only count less than a handful features that aren't included in this receiver. 3D, ARC, DSX PLIIz, MultEQ...

Onkyo TX-NR709 review

Onkyo's TX-NR709 ups the audiophile ante of the much-loved TX-NR609, and has a back panel busier than Oxford Street at Christmas. In come binding posts for all speaker terminals, bi-amping capability, 7.1 phono inputs and 7.2 pre-outs, which is...

Networking including online audio access; multichannel inputs; ease of use; dynamic sound

Onkyo TX-NR709

Features, performance, ease-of-use – Onkyo's awesome amp delivers on all three counts

Lots of features and connections ; Easy to set up and use ; Masterful movie performance

No search feature for media playback ; Wi-Fi dongle is optional ; More musical receivers on the market

The TX-NR709 is expensive but certainly won’t leave you feeling short-changed. Abundant connections will keep you futureproofed for ages, there’s a wealth of features on board and its performance with movies is first rate. There are more musical amps...

Onkyo TX-NR709

Authoritative, dynamic sound, subtlety and detail in abundance, nice to use, eight HDMI inputs, good network functionality

No Apple AirPlay

Onkyo TX-NR709

The Onkyo TX-NR709 builds on the company's years of network support in home theatre receivers, and includes excellent home theatre connectivity with fine audio and video support.

Excellent audio performance ; Excellent video performance ; Good network/USB support (including FLAC)

Clumsy main menu implementation

That aside, the Onkyo TX-NR7009 is a top-notch home theatre receiver, ready to do first-class duty in just about any system.

Updated Review

Customer service was nice enough to make a "one-time-only" courtesy repair. I had to pay shipping, but after getting it back, it has worked flawlessly. I would advise against placing any other equipment on top of this unit, placing this unit in a...

Numerous inputs including HDMI, Component, and Composite video; analog audio inputs, coaxial, optical, or HDMI for audio. Up to 7.1 surround. Great features such as a default volume upon startup

Failed after 3 years. After research, it seems that this and a few other Onkyo models are plagued by inadequate heat dissipation similar to what caused older XBox 360s to fail (red-ring). Basically, how I understand it is, the board is fastened down,...

Loss of Audio Extended Warranty

Onkyo just went a step up in my mind that they are helping everyone with this problem even though we are out of warranty.

Excellent audio quality. Lots of input options. Ability to Bi-Amp front speakers. Auto room calibration. Lots of options to tweak your sound just the way you want it

Just over 2 years later all the sound quit ; But a quick call to Onkyo and they shipped out a box to send them the receiver to repair free of charge ; Evidently this is a problem that has come up with certain receivers from 2009-2012 that the network...

Product failed after 3 years.

This product had great reviews, but in my opinion they are based on initial impression and Onkyo's quality history. Having had no prior experience with Onkyo, I am left highly disappointed that an item I paid $650 for only lasted 3 years.

Numerous inputs including HDMI, Component, and Composite video; analog audio inputs, coaxial, optical, or HDMI for audio. Up to 7.1 surround. Great features such as a default volume upon startup

Failed after 3 years. Unit now produces no sound from any source whatsoever. Not even the FM tuner. Too expensive to replace something like this every 3 years. Apparently of much poorer quality than I was lead to believe. Unit is also fairly heavy and...

Tips for awesome sound quality: - Measure out your speaker setup. The center of the listening area should be your head. - Run a full calibration with the included Audyssey mic. Place the mic realistically. Audyssey XT does an amazing job at...

I've had this receiver for over a year. I haven't had a single regret. I think this receiver could compete with a lot of $1000 range receivers in terms of features and sound quality.Once you get a good understanding of the available features and...
