Apple TV Review

The new Apple TV looks exactly like the previous version: same small black box. It's got the same inputs and outputs on the back: AC power, HDMI output, micro-USB for service only, optical audio output, 10/100 Ethernet. It's just as easy to set up:...

1080p support added. Capable streaming from Macs, PCs, and iOS devices. Internet content from Netflix, MLB, NHL, NBA, and more. Streams photos from Flickr, iCloud Photo Stream, and MobileMe

Can’t add more content channels or customize interface. Can’t connect it to a TV without HDMI

If you’ve been waiting for 1080p, now’s the time to get an Apple TV, especially if you’re heavily invested in iTunes content and/or you want to beam your media from your Mac to your TV. But if your big-screen TV tops out at 720p, and you just want to...

Apple TV (2012)

Released in March, Apple's third-generation puck ($100) retains the form factor of its predecessor while adding 1080p playback. The real draw remains the same, though: seamless integration with iTunes, iCloud, and the rest of the Apple ecosystem.

Streaming Star

The 2012 version of Apple TV has the big feature we've all been waiting for: Full 1080p HD output from iTunes and Netflix.

Apple TV (fall 2010)

Apple may or may not release a television someday. In the meantime, it offers a tiny $99 streaming box called the Apple TV.

The Apple TV lets you stream all of the movies and TV shows available in the iTunes Store to your HDTV on a rental or purchase basis, with purchases stored in the cloud. Netflix, MLB.TV, Hulu Plus, and a handful of other online media services are...

The Apple TV is a less useful box if you don't own other Apple devices. Roku's competing boxes are less expensive and offer more streaming services, including Amazon Instant, HBO Go, and Pandora. And the Apple TV doesn't work with non-HDMI TVs.

Those who've already invested in iTunes content and Apple hardware will find the Apple TV to be an indispensable living-room companion, and it's an excellent streaming-video box for non-Apple folks as well.

Apple TV review (2012)

After endless speculation and debate, Apple's latest event came and went with nary a mention of a Cupertino-made television set. But Apple's little set-top box did get a refresh, bringing some oft-requested upgrades and improvements to the $99 device....

1080p video looks great ; Really intuitive interface ; Setup is incredibly simple

Still not enough content ; Remote is too basic for some functions

The hardware's there, but we're still waiting on the content

Apple TV (2010)

Apple's slimmed down set-top box sequel makes it dead simple to rent movies and TV shows, as well as stream content from PCs and (soon) iOS devices.

The next year is going to be an interesting time for media boxes, with Apple TV, Google, Roku, Boxee, and others all vying for a spot next to your set. Because of its low price, the Apple TV's closest competitor is the Roku XDS, which, for $99, works...

Apple TV ( fall 2010)

The Apple TV lets you stream all of the movies and TV shows available in the iTunes Store to your HDTV on a pay-per-view basis, with purchases stored in the cloud for future on-demand access. It offers Netflix and a handful of other online video,...

The competing Roku 2 offers more streaming services, including Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, and Pandora. The new AirPlay mirroring feature seems cool, but doesn't currently have much practical use. And the upcoming Roku LT will offer much of the...

The Apple TV is an excellent streaming video box, especially for Apple fans who will use AirPlay and the upcoming iTunes Match service, but it's missing a few key apps like Hulu Plus and Pandora.

Apple TV review (2010)

You've been waiting, and it's finally here: the Apple TV review. Months before Steve Jobs announced the new set top box at Apple's annual fall event, we

Killer pricing ; Video and audio quality is excellent ; Elegant, simple interface

Content selection is limited ; Doesn't allow purchases ; Can only network via Apple Home Sharing

Apple TV

Apple's video receiver is stylish and easy to set up, but you're confined mostly to iTunes-supported content. On the other hand, that content now includes downloadable movies.

Very easy to set up, Smooth, block-free images

Limited to iTunes-compatible media, High-def capability maxes out at 720p

Your computer is the center of your digital life. Your TV is the center of your entertainment life. But what if you want to watch movies, TV shows, movie trailers, podcasts, and photos from your computer on your TV? Apple TV brings iTunes to the big screen. Say you've just downloaded Cars from iTunes. Instead of huddling around your computer to watch, you pop some popcorn while your computer wirelessly syncs your new flick to Apple TV. Then you pull up a seat, put up your feet, and pick up the included Apple Remote to play your movie on TV. Give yourself a hand: you've just changed the way you watch digital media. Apple TV connects to your TV via an HDMI port or component video and audio ports. Its built-in, superfast 802.11 wireless capability syncs your iTunes library to any Mac or PC in the house. Best of all, what's on Apple TV stays in sync: anytime you change your library in iTunes, it changes on Apple TV - wirelessly, automatically. Apple TV puts your iTunes library - movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts - plus movie trailers from Apple.com on your TV. And your digital photos from iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Album on a Windows PC appear in high definition, so you can put on a stunning big-screen slideshow.
