Manhattan Plaza DT-100 review

Switchover is well under way, but there are still thousands of outmoded TV sets in need of an upgrade. Not that there's any shortage of Freeview-equipped set-top boxes on the market, or course.

AV erformance ; Tuner ; Build quality

EPG a little sluggish ; Not the cheaest adater you can buy

It's a shame there isn't any upscaling as the rest of the features on this box are great

Accessible software; Great picture and sound; Media playback

Remote buttons small; No playlisting; Upscaling would have been nice

Audio performance is solid from TV and radio sources as well as reasonably high bit-rate MP3s both via our test TV's (a Samsung LED) speakers and when connecting the digital and analogue connectors to a home cinema system

Don't need the fancy likes of recording, HD pictures or media streaming but just want a standard definition Freeview box that works? Cast your eyes towards this cut-price cutie.

The Plaza DT-100+ might be rather bare bones on the feature front but what it does it does very well indeed. RGB pictures through the SCART are of course standard def – with no HDMI there’s no option to upscale the image – but sharp and vibrant

As we say, it’s bare bones: there’s no upscaling, no recorder (not even via a connected USB device) and little aside from the absolute basics. But what do you expect from a Freeview box this cheap

If all you want is a working Freeview box that costs much less than a steakhouse dinner, the Plaza DT-100+ is ideal. It’s not fancy, but it’s reliable.
