Toshiba HDR5010 review

Toshiba's well-mannered hi-def PVR shares some DNA with its TVonics rival

Good HD performance ; HDMI switcher ; Large hard drive ; Extremely quiet

USB media playback for photos only

Toshiba HDR5010KB

The Toshiba HDR5010KB features a 500GB hard drive, which allows for up to 125 hours of HD recording or an equally impressive 250 hours of SD programming. Built into a piano black, gloss case this PVR bears a striking resemblance to a high end DVD or...

If you are looking for a box that will deliver a great feature set at a decent price, you can’t go far wrong with this PVR. At a shade under £200 it can add a new lease of life to an old LCD TV and gives a feeling of technological excellence well above...

Silent when working which is wonderful after the 2 previous digital recorders i've had

Could not tune my TV to the handset, which means I can't change the volume with the recorder remote, the volume is less coming from the recorder than the TV so the volume needs adjusting on the TV remote when you first put the recorder on

Everything apart from the remote

The remote range is not that good, and must be pointed straight at the box

Great picture quality, easy to set up and easy to use navigation

Slow to start up and quite slow on channel change. The main buttons on the remote like; Guide, Library etc could be bigger

Easy to set up, works well, large disk for the money. UI is easy to comprehend, though not as feature-rich as other models. Pictures are good, but sound level through HDMI can't be controlled

Badly designed fascia -- the bright red ring when it's in standby is ridiculously bright, whereas the LEDs that show it actually doing something are very dim. It also doesn't display the name of the prorgramme being played back (unlike Humax and...
