Toshiba HDR5010 review

Toshiba's well-mannered hi-def PVR shares some DNA with its TVonics rival

Good HD erformance ; HDMI switcher ; Large hard drive ; Extremely quiet

USB media layback for hotos only

Toshiba HDR5010 review

Toshiba's HDR5010 does everything a Freeview HD digital TV recorder should do, without fuss or fanfare. It's intuitive to use, has a generous hard drive and is well priced at around £200. It's just the ticket if you want a box to record dramas, not...

Generous 500GB hard drive ; Simple to use ; Quiet operation ; Integrated HDMI switcher

USB only reads photos ; Dormant Ethernet

Overall, the HDR5010 works well. It's a shame that the USB inputs are blind to anything other than photos, and that the Ethernet is snoozing, as both would add some welcome clevery-dickery to proceedings. But if you're looking for a PVR that's simply...

Toshiba HDR5010KB

The Toshiba HDR5010KB features a 500GB hard drive, which allows for up to 125 hours of HD recording or an equally impressive 250 hours of SD programming. Built into a piano black, gloss case this PVR bears a striking resemblance to a high end DVD or...

There is no getting away from that fact that having a Sky HD or Virgin HD subscription can get expensive, which is why Freeview HD is set to dominate over the coming years. The Toshiba HDR5010KB allows for full reception (aerial dependent) of...

To be honest, there isn’t much in this box to find fault with. If we had to pick something, it would be the build quality. The box is sturdy, however the front panel feels a little cheap and the power button feels like something you would press on a...

If you are looking for a box that will deliver a great feature set at a decent price, you can’t go far wrong with this PVR. At a shade under £200 it can add a new lease of life to an old LCD TV and gives a feeling of technological excellence well above...

Toshiba HDR 5010 - A missed opportunity

Sound and picture quality are good. Power consumption is commendably low, less than 1 watt in standby and only 10 to 12 when in use. It is absolutely quiet in use. Unlike the case with a number of other DTR's, including those from Humax and Digital...

good sound and picture, low energy use, arial feedthough even in standby, easy to set up, very quiet

poor remote control, very slow at channel switching, poor front display, inadequate skip function, poor technical support

TOSHIBA HDR5010KB

Simple to use ; Not noisy in operation

can be slow, but if you are patient it isnt really a problem ; quite a bright and highly visible standby light

TOSHIBA HDR5010KB

recordings 98% of the time start exactly at the beginning. for some reason only the gadget show begins after the credits. it doesn't have claim a time slip feature but you can time slip ; nice guide

slow to start up, unless already recording ; not so good when 3 recordings clash; ie; 2 recordings about to start and one to finish. it has locked up twice

TOSHIBA HDR5010KB

Very good recording options including 2 program record facility ; Very quiet while recording i.e. no disc noise

The remote control cannot be set up to operate the Volume and Mute for my Panasonic Plasma TV so 2 remote controls are needed. Toshiba has not offered a solution
