Canon CanoScan 8600F

The 8600F's claimed optical resolution of 4,800 pixels per inch is significantly higher than the 8400F's 3,200 ppi, and the actual ability to resolve detail—which is usually limited by a scanner's optics rather than its ppi rating—is improved as well....

Scans slides and strips of film. Comes with optical character recognition (OCR) and document-management software

Scans only four slides at a time. Tends to lose detail in bright areas

The Canon CanoScan 8600F delivers reasonable-quality scans for photographic prints and film—both slides and negatives. Its film-scanning features are limited, but appropriate for the price.

Canon CanoScan 8600F (4 mice)

Although it was a little slow to warm up, and its photo scans were a touch dark, the CanoScan 8600F proved to be a very good all-around scanner and should definitely be considered if you are looking for a high-quality photo and document scanner.

Built-in transparency adapter ; speedy scans ; very good scan quality

Slow to warm up ; photo scans a bit dark

There are seven handy task buttons on top of this silver and black flatbed scanner; these automate a number of tasks, such as scanning a document into PDF format, importing photos or slides into the image editor of your choosing, or scanning a document...

decent value

I have not tried slides or negatives. For text, is not great, using color to scan a black and whote document with, say, a signed blue siganature, results in a purple scan where the white paper should be-looks like the scan is the fluorescent light...

high resolution, feature software

slow, loose hinges

Canon 8600F Scanner

I've found from past experience Canon equipment is hard to beat.

Quality scanner, producing excellent results for a great price. Setup is a breeze and included software is very good. Used mostly for scanning 35mm slides and negatives conversion to digital images and storage; occasional documents. It replaces a...

Probably the best in this price range

USB2 requires a lot of processor overhead. I have a dual-core Opteron 180, and scans often require 70% of my CPU power. If your computer is too slow, the scanner will slow down to match it. You will need a reasonably fast machine to scan at full speed.

Exceptional build quality for the price range. Has two stainless steel guide rails for the lamp carrier. Supports Vista x64 and XP x64. Quality of scans is excellent. Included scanning software features good auto-tone and descreening (to avoid moire on...

Vista drivers seem to have a bug that causes the lamp to auto-adjust for every scan. Very slow, and doesn't happen in XP x64 for some reason ; Probably as fast as any scanner in this price range, but that can be too slow for large scanning jobs

Great Upgrade

I had an older canon scanner that cost less than half as much as this one at the time (3 years ago).

If I had to name a fault, and it may be me, but the film scanning seems a little out of focus/blurry to me-it may be the original film was out of focus-so I can't be sure at this point.

A Pretty Slick Item

Part of Canon's armored scanner division, this thing is nice and heavy. Installed in a flash worked fine (won't operate off a hub, needs to be connected directly). Quiet too. Scans are crystal clear. Worth every dollar

Pleasant surprise

Great value, would buy again.

Better scan quality than I expected from an inexpensive flatbed model. The included Photoshop Elements software is capable enough to touch up scans, remove dust/scratches, etc ; After having used much more expensive scanners in a print shop's pre-press...

Arcsoft and New Soft software (to me) is bloat-ware as it isn't needed. I can manage my files on my own just fine without it. You do have the option to NOT install them though

Performance Meets Value

Easy to use.

The supplied film guide cannot be purchased as replacement part.

Current state-of-the-art?

Solidly built.

Scans of 35mm negatives can take 10 minutes each if you engage any software corrections for dust, scratches or grain.
