Canon CanoScan LiDE 500F

File the Canon CanoScan LiDE 500 ($129.99 direct) under good things in small packages. At 1.3 by 10.9 by 15.5 inches and 4 pounds, it's small enough to qualify as portable. And although the lack of an ADF limits its usefulness for general office...

Good scan quality. Color restore feature revives old photos. Scans directly to PDF format. Built-in stand for vertical setup to take up minimum desk space

Dust- and scratch-removal feature doesn't do much. Film scanning is cumbersome. Can't scan slides. No ADF

The Canon CanoScan LiDE 500 is small and light enough to be portable, yet it offers reasonable scan quality along with an OCR program and the ability to scan directly to PDF format. A nice touch is a built-in stand that gives you the option to set it...

CanoScan LiDE 500F

The great-looking scanner is a good buy for those folks with limited desktop space, but the scans aren't quite up to the standards set by its more expensive siblings.

Highly flexible design ; powered through USB port ; inexpensive

Modest film-scanning capabilities ; scans are a little dark

At 1.3 inches thick, this silver-colored scanner can easily be mistaken for a 17-inch PowerBook. But beyond looks, the LiDE's clever design allows the lid to bend over backward, literally, so you can scan oversized objects like books and magazines. The...

Good Deal

New Mac driver on Canon web site. Vertical placement is cool, don't know if it works with my workflow. High resolution makes dust appear easily. Don't place next to an open window while scanning, keep microfiber towel/Viva Paper Towels (soft &...

Great Price, faster than my LiDE 25 (USB 1.0), makes cool, quiet sounds when scanning, compact size, 1 cable design allows putting away (back in box) easy, negative scanner capability, silly buttons are actually useful (when re-programed). OmniPage SE...

NewEgg photo is wrong (Looks more like the LiDE 700F) Mac CanoScan Toolbox X has clunky interface, default scans are JPEG (change settings to a lossless format, like TIFF), installation is weird, but not impossible. Doesn't have holder for slides (but...

Only trouble.

Only trouble.

Got this scanner lured by slim design and good price. I bought it over year ago - well it didn't work on my previous laptop - usb did not provide enough power to make it work. Then I got new computer - this time power is o.k, but drivers from provided...

A Lemon of A Scanner

A Lemon of A Scanner

A fast, powerful OCR scanner is what I had hoped for, but instead got a slow scanner with presumed OCR technology that doesn't work well. Furthermore, the scanner software that comes with the scanner is terrible, and has a poor working interface. I do...

Great Scanner, funky software

After finding that HP would not offer drivers for my two year old scanner, I wrote them off my list forever, did a fleeting review search and gave up, heading down to Comp USA, feeling that I have spent months researching. Getting a new scanner should ...

Great design, immediate install, resolution, stands upright.

Funky software, no automatic fax setting, cannot select email client, Corel bloatware.

If you can get one of these, do it

too bad it's end of sales, as this does meet all the postive reviews posted here. was looking for a scanner for general home use and photo scanning... the reviews for the newer versions seemed to be not as glowing as those for the 500F. Got a chance...

Good scanner, lousy software

Canon has never released a Universal/Intel binary of their Mac OS X driver. The UI is cheap. If they fixed the software, this would be a great product.

Product Specifications

The LiDE 500F combines breath-takingly slender design, outstanding functionality and an ultra-stylish finish. Drawing all the power it needs from a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection, the scanner's slim size and integrated stand allow you to operate your scanner in a variety of different ways - even upright. When the scanner is upright, a double hinge lid allows 'drop-in' scanning. With the stand folded away, open the lid completely out to scan oversize objects such as maps or posters. The lid also opens parallel to accept bulky items such as books.
