Great results with negatives and prints for historical foundation

I use this scanner to scan large format and medium format negatives, as well as prints, for local historical foundation. I use Vuescan with the scanner, and, find it quite helpful in getting the best results. Scanning at high resolutions, particularly negatives, if obviously slow, but, acceptable, and the templates for holding the negatives is easy to use and effective. Examples of scanned 4x5 negatives and other negatives can be found here. (Look for images that state they are scanned from negatives, as, others are scanning prints with other scanners) For examples of negatives scanned with this scanner, go to Berrien Historical Photograph Collection (Georgia) and search for "negatives" for some scans from this scanner.

HP Scanjet G4050

HP's colossal scanner packs in the goods but fails to deliver

The sharpness and detail levels of the scanner were excellent. When scanning textures, we got an equal amount of detail from the parts that were touching the glass bed as well as the parts that were slightly raised. Its the raised part where most home...

HP Scanjet G4050

The basic idea is simple, if somewhat inelegant. A scanner generally uses a single light source that shines through (in the case of slides and negatives) or reflects off of (prints and objects) an original; the light then passes through red, green, and...

Excellent scans, especially of very saturated originals; very nice industrial design.

Only supports sRGB color space; random color registration problems on slide scans; weak driver; many operations are very slow.

The HP Scanjet G4050 is a solid scanner that could use a driver overhaul and a better means of handling slides.

HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

The G4050, which is aimed at home users who are primarily interested in scanning photos, is one of two HP six-color scanners. The other is the HP Scanjet G4010 Photo Scanner ($150 street). The two are essentially identical when it comes to scanning...

Six-color scanning yields excellent color quality. Scans photographic prints and film. Can scan up to 16 slides at once

Scan software is cumbersome in some ways and sometimes slow to react to a command

The HP Scanjet G4050 offers six-color scanning for excellent scan color and does a good job on both prints and film, including mounted slides.

"Good scanner IF you use Vuescan"

Bottom line, do not use with the included program. It's horrible, and will cause no end of problems. With a 3rd party program like Vuescan ($40) its an entirely different scanner and can give great output. Be ready to wait though because at maximum...

Looks good.

Big, takes lots of deskspace

"Good Hardware, Software Could be Better"

Best scanner I've owned, by far.

Great scanner for the money. Has worked with every thing I can throw at it.

HP should fire all of it's software engineers. The included software uses flash, with the current version installed on your machine "hard coded" into it. What does that mean? That means anytime you have to update flash, you also need to re-install your

"Awesome w/Mac Snow Leopard"

Improvement in software over the G4010. Can use on Mac Snow leopard. Nice to have the cover for the top unit so it doesn't show through, which happens in the G4010.

Can crop scans to letter size- G4010 didn't.

Seems to save multiple .pdf pages separately, even tho' I scanned as additional pages.
