Good scanner, bad lubricant

Good scanner, bad lubricant

I use the LS-2000 with the bulk slide loader. For the price (used thru ebay), it can't be beat. The scans are very good, to my eye. The software works well. I followed Nikon instructions and updated the firmware in the scanner with no problem. The...

Great scanner for it's time

This was a great scanner for it's time. It does a good job of scanning slides (haven't used it much for negative scanning). The Color Management System doesn't do the job I wish it did, often the colors are darker than the slide, so I usually adjust...

Watch out for Nikon's Technical Support - Windows XP Issues

This is a great scanner - but first time buyers of such a scanner, with Windows XP as an operating system beware! If you purchase the scanner, be sure that the package contains the Installation CD that contains the Windows XP installation update. Many...

Good scanner, poor software

Excellent quality scans

Software buggy with a poor interface

Professioanally tested scanner

This is a very good scanner for the money. I am a photojournalist at a newspaper and these are the scanners we use most often. For super high quality scans we use a leaf and drum scanners which both have five digit price tags.

It's a workhorse, professional grade scanner

Software is cumbersome. It's not the fastest scanner out there.

Good midrange film scanner

The Nikon Coolscan III produces consistent and accurate scans under most normal conditions. I found that the Digital ICE was EXTREMELY useful and saved a lot of time and energy by eliminating dust and scratches in the film that otherwise would have to...

Best of breed, but understand its drawbacks before buying

Automatically removes flaws, excellent color depth and range, high resolution

Clumsy software, mediocre shadow detail, Digital ICE doesn't work on B&W images.

Product Specifications

LS-30 (Coolscan III) 10-bit personal film scanner features Digital ICE, a revolutionary new technology that locates, isolates and subtracts defects such as dust, scratches, and smudges on the film surface. This scanner's results can rival that of drum scanners with its Multi-Sample scanning technology, a scanning method that samples the image up to 16 times, then combines the data into one image. The Coolscan III also comes with Nikon Scan drive software for comprehensive control for the best scanning results. The Coolscan III scans 35mm film and Advanced Photo System film (with optional adapter), positive or negative, color or monochrome, at a 2700 dpi resolution. The Nikon Color Management System provides very accurate color and correctly matches colors on monitors and printers, and users can work in sRGB, CMYK, RGB and Lch color spaces. It comes with two adapters that can be hot-swapped without the need to reset the scanner: a slide mount adapter and a strip film adapter. Also available is an optional Advanced Photo system film adapter for APS cartridges. The Coolscan III offers auto focus, single-pass RGB line sequential image transfer and file sizes up to 28MB.
