Digital Film Scanners - Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED Film Scanner Review, Information, and Specifications

True professional-quality scans, 4000 dpi resolution (67MB file from 35mm neg!), 42-bit color depth (!), plus 16x for 48-bit equivalent, high-speed FireWire (IEEE 1394) interface (card included for both Mac and PC), amazing "Digital ICE" dust & scratch...

As a tool for extracting the maximum amount of information from a piece of film, the Super Coolscan 4000 ED literally has no equal in the desktop scanner world. (At least, among the scanners we've tested to date.) Applying its full power involves a...

Nikon Coolscan 4000

Most slide films up to 100 ASA and Kodak E200 and Provia 400F have MUCH smaller grain than one of the finest grain negative films Fuji Superia Reala. Negative film scratches easily.

Excellent 35 mm film scanner

Very good picture quality, plenty of adjustments(curves)and correction functions (GEM, unsharp mask, ROC)available. Grain removal by GEM is very effective. Strongly built and reliable. Very sharp pictures with excellent colors and dynamic range at 14-bit

Expensive. NikonScan software often requires a lot of manual curve adjustments on preview in order to make the scan look right. When scanning negatives, it can literally "go bananas", producing extreme color cast or very dark picture at "nominal" settings

Outstanding quality at an affordable price

I use this to scan 35mm slides for digital prints up to 13x19" so I use the full 4000 ppi capability. I've found it to be easy to use and the final scanned quality to be excellent. Compared to the HP PhotoSmart scanner I was previously using, it's...
