This last review stating that the Astra 6400 is not OS X compatible is not correct, there is a software upgrade on the UMAX website for $49.

WARNING: NO SUPPORT FOR OS X

I bought the 6450 (same as this with transparency adapter) a year or so ago and it worked well enough under Mac OS 9.1. However, when I upgraded my Mac to OS X I was astonished to find out that Umax does not support this series of scanners under OS X...

Product Specifications

The UMAX Astra 6400 offers the fast speed of FireWire/IEEE-1394 technology along with hot-pluggable support for fast, versatile, and high quality image capture. The Astra 6400 is up to twice as fast as identical SCSI scanner. With hot-pluggability user can connect or disconnect the scanner at any time without restarting the system. A FireWire/1394 card (for PC) is also included with the Astra 6400. With 600 x 1200 dpi optical resolution, the Astra 6400 provides image scalability allowing the user to scan and enlarge slides and other media. Featuring 42-bit internal color, it will also provide billions of sharp, vibrant colors. UMAX' exclusive Intelligent Image Process Engine (IIPE) automatically detects whether a document or photograph would best be rendered in color, grayscale, or black and white. Unlike most scanners, the Astra 6400 does not require the user to define media type, color type or size. IIPE technology also determines the optimal resolution, auto-crops the image area, and even rotates the output to the correct orientation if the source image is askew on the scanner bed. The Astra 6400 offers a solid software solution including Adobe Photoshop LE, OmniPage LE OCR and Presto! PageManager. Adobe Photoshop LE software delivers a set of the image-editing tools preferred by graphic design professionals around the world.
