The key shortcoming to PC-free scanning is that the scans get stored in memory without you seeing them first. If you transfer them to your PC sometime later, and find out the quality isn't good enough, it's too late to rescan something you no longer...

Portable. Scans with or without a computer. Scans to smartphone so you can see scanned images immediately

You have to be careful to scan business cards in proper file format or the business card program can't read them

The Visioneer Mobility is the first portable scanner we've seen that can scan without a computer and still let you see the scans immediately, as long as you have a smartphone.

A battery-powered scanner means you're no longer tied to a PC, or even a notebook, though a phone still can be handy.

Independent, through battery operation ; Can use smartphone for scan preview ; Micro SD card supplied for storage

Visioneer Mobility scanner

 

I bought one of these in Dec 2011 and have yet to have it working satisfactorily. Firstly the cable connection wouldn't work to charge the machine up. It was very tempremental and would only connect occassionally. I finally gave up and sent it back to...
