Visioneer Strobe 500

This portable scanner can process two sides of a page at once, and has a removable document feeder.

Capable of duplexing ; Optional docking station with an autofeeder ; Simple hardware interface ; Software allows users to search inside PDFs ; Mac-compatible

Dated design ; Included software has a complicated UI ; Expensive

Although its 2.2-pound weight (3.9 pounds with the docking station) might turn off frequent fliers, we recommend the s fast and functional. It can scan multiple sides of a document or business card, feed multiple pages at once, and, thanks to the...

Review: Visioneer Strobe 500 document scanner

The Visioneer Strobe 500's clever docking station allows it to server as both a desktop document scanner and a portable scanner.

The beige and black Strobe 500 is a portable scanner about the size of a box of Saran wrap. The scanner can use power from USB (using two USB cables) and scan one sheet at a time, or you can attach it to the included black docking station with its...

Visioneer Strobe 500 review

The Visioneer Strobe 500's combination of superior performance, excellent image quality, versatile features, and easy operation earned it the top ranking among the five portable scanners we tested for our latest roundup.

Overall, the Visioneer Strobe 500 portable scanner is an excellent choice for scanning and converting paper documents into easily readable electronic files for storage and distribution.

Decent scanner for the price

For the price this scanner is a good choice if it is for occasional use. If you regularly scan many receipts a day, look elsewhere.

We bought this scanner from Newegg in 2010. It is still a general-purpose workhorse in the office. It can give either fast, OK quality scans or somewhat slower, high resolution ones. The software bundled with the scanner is not worth installing. You...

As others mention, scanning receipts can be frustrating. The scanner allows inserting papers into either the top feeder slot (used for multiple sheets) or directly into the front of the scanner. The front-load slot is useful for a single page, as the...

Decent scanner

When scanning duplex on a cable longer than 6' the scanner errors out and has to be reset every few pages. I've ran into this with other scanners as well so I probably has nothing to do with this model. Best to just use the included USB cable.

This is a decent scanner for the price. I've been using one for a couple years now with no real complaints when it comes to regular paper.

When scanning receipts or anything on that thin waxy type of paper the scanner sometimes just crumples them up.

terrible order fulfillment

Verified product configuration on newegg website that ADF was included, as well as provantage, amzn, e bay, and visioneer, and newegg clearly shipped me the wrong product and a used product. Tried to call, closed. Tried to chat (supposed to be open...

Ordered product, which is supposed to include the ADF. Newegg not only shipped me the scanner only version without the docking station and the ADF, they shipped me a product which had been previously shipped to someone else. It still had the shipping...

Often Frustrating to Use

I have three of these machines for over two years. The longer I have them the less well the hardware and software works. The scanning software often locks up and to remedy this I have to either exit and re-run the program, turn the scanner off and on...

Solidly built, produces quality images. provides options on resolution/file size trade-off plus choice of black and white, gray scale and color. Will produce pdf files and has a primative drawing program to edit files.

Document feeder often does not grabe the first sheet. Scanning software often locks up.

Visioneer STROBE-500

Setup was quick and easy. Paper misfeeds are rare. Too bad this item became deactivated a week after I bought it. On the bright side I found a PlusTek machine that works just as well if not better than this one, at a lesser cost.

Deactivated.
