Sun Fire V20z

The AMD Opteron processor isn't just for Windows-based systems: Take a look at the Sun Fire V20z, which has dual Opteron CPUs running either Solaris-x86 or a Linux variant like SUSE Linux-64. With the V20z, you can have the benefits of x86-compatible...

Sun Linux or Solaris OS less susceptible to the ravages of Windows-based viruses. Good hardware compatibility thanks to AMD Opteron platform. Complex pages and databases can be served more efficiently thanks to 64-bit support

Server administrators will have to wait for Solaris 10 to use 64-bit x86 architecture, unless they go Linux-64. Two drive bays mean "only" Raid Level 0 or 1 possible in box

A pizza box for the non-Windows set, the Sun Fire V20z is ready for the shift to x86-64-bit computing on the Web server front. At this price, it makes a decent alternative to other x86 Windows platforms or the Apple XServe system.

Opteron-powered Sun Fire V20z proves competent

That leaves the V20z server well-suited for use in a load-balanced Web farm, or in any other applications where decent CPU and I/O performance is required but where the server’s lack of high availability features would be tolerated. It’s a good server...
