Philips Hue White LED Starter Kit review

There's an awful lot to like about Philips Hue's smart lighting ecosystem. It's polished. It's easy to use. It works with just about everything. The only problem? The price. A starter kit with the essential Philips Hue Bridge and three color-changing...

The plain, vanilla version of Philips Hue's smart LEDs don't change colors, but they do enjoy all of the benefits of Hue's well-connected platform. They're also bright, good looking bulbs with easy-to-use smarts, and you can add extras to your setup...

At $70, the two-bulb starter kit still comes with a fair share of sticker shock.

Philips Hue is one of the best-developed DIY smart-home platforms money can buy, and this white-light starter kit is your most affordable entry point. It's practically a must-buy if you're serious about smart lighting.

Philips Hue White Ambiance

The Philips Hue White Ambiance is a smart bulb that shifts color temperatures across the white spectrum, but you can get the same basic features for half the price with the Hue White.

Easy setup. Lots of features and support. Adjustable color temperatures in white spectrum.

Not that bright. White only. Requires a hub.

Conclusions The Philips Hue White Ambiance is a worthwhile consideration if you're already part of the Philips Hue family, and you want to add mood lighting to your house. But if you want more affordable and brighter light for every room in your home,...

Philips Hue White Ambiance

The Philips Hue White Ambiance LEDs aim to change all of that. They won't put out light in pink, purple, or green like other Hue bulbs, but they will shift color temperatures within that white-light spectrum: warm, candle-like tones at one end and...

The Hue White Ambiance LEDs are reliable and fairly easy to set up and use. Hue's wide compatibility with third-parties means that you'll be able to use them with a variety of different platforms, including Nest, SmartThings, Alexa and Apple HomeKit.

Siri doesn't recognize the white light spectrum yet, so you can't ask her to change the tone of your lights without pre-programming a scene first. Also, the bulbs aren't as bright as advertised.

The White Ambiance LEDs fill in a gap in the Philips Hue family of smart bulbs, but they didn't outperform color-tunable LEDs from Lifx and Stack. They're really only worth it if you're already committed to Hue, or to HomeKit.

Philips Hue White

The Philips Hue White is the best way to bring smart lighting to your home on a reasonable budget.

Relatively affordable. Easy setup. Bright light. Lots of features.

Requires a hub. White only.

Conclusions For $15, the Philips Hue White isn't going to replace the standard $2 CFL bulb anytime soon. But for anyone looking to get into smart lighting (not to mention existing Hue users), the Hue White is an excellent option. It's affordable enough...

Philips Hue Wireless Dimming Kit review: Control your Hue LED lights even when you don’t have your smartphone

It's not the ultimate lighting-control system, but it's a great solution for some thorny problems.

White LED bulb included in the kit ; Remotely controls any Philips Hue bulb (up to 10 bulbs)

Relies on the Philips Hue bridge, not included, for remote access and scheduling ; Can't control bulbs independently

Philips Hue Wireless Dimming Kit

The Philips Hue Wireless Dimming Kit combines a remote dimmer and a white LED that works with other Hue lights, but they also work together out of the box with no app or bridge required.

Simple setup. Works without hub. Bright light.

Only comes with one bulb. Tricky to connect to Hue bridge.

Conclusions If you're already invested in the Philips Hue ecosystem, the Wireless Dimming Kit is a great way to add bulbs with adjustable brightness to your home. But even for newbies, the kit makes it easy to get started in the world of connected...

Philips Hue Wireless Dimming Kit Review

Dimming lights used to be easy with incandescent bulbs, but the new age of LEDs can be a flickering, migraine-inducing mess. Philips believes its Hue Wireless Dimming Kit is the answer, the combination of a simple white bulb with an equally...

Philips hue Review

Philips has been pushing color-changing lighting for years now, but with Philips hue the concept may finally have come of age. No longer amorphous lamp blobs, the hue bulbs screw easily into your existing light fittings and, on the face of it, do...

Philips’ hue apps aren’t entirely refined, and the promise of third-party integration is yet to materialize, but hue is off to an excellent start where it counts: bringing the cost of color-changing lighting down to a more manageable price point. That...

Philips Hue Review

So if you’re looking to get smart lighting for your house, it’s a no-brainer to go with Philips Hue. They might be a bit expensive for your budget, but even if you just go with the $15 white-only bulbs ($10 if you get the Dimmer Kit ), it can make your...
