Crucial m4 (512GB)

Sharing the same design and interface as most of the other solid-state drives we've reviewed, the Crucial m4 stands out where it matters most: the price. It's still much more expensive than a traditional hard drive, but the m4 is the most affordable...

The Crucial m4 solid-state drive is competitively priced and offers fast performance. The drive supports SATA 6Gbps and works in all SATA-based storage applications.

The Crucial m4's performance could be better comparatively, and it doesn't come with a drive-bay converter to work with desktop computers.

So far, the Crucial m4 offers the best value among SSDs. Though it's not the fastest, it's by far the most affordable among its peers.

Otherwise, the m4 came in third more frequently than it came in second—though it routinely surpassed the Intel drive (often by a large margin) in heavier-duty tests, such as the AS SSD Benchmark 4KB test at a queue depth of 32 (158.59MBps for read and...

Good performance. Supports 6Gbps SATA III

Expensive. Outperformed in most tests by competing SSDs. Slow garbage collection demands TRIM support in OS

Though the 256GB Crucial m4 offers good performance in most situations, it's surpassed by competing drives from OCZ and Intel that push SSD technology a bit further.

Crucial M4 (256GB)

If you've ever looked into upgrading the RAM in your PC, there's a good chance you're familiar with the name Crucial. The brand, owned by Boise, Idaho-based Micron Technology, has a long history in the memory business. Plus, parent company Micron, in a...

Consistently fast performance on all of our benchmarks ; Doesn't lag far behind pricier drives ; Also available in 7mm versions for thin laptops

Accessories and software cost extra ; Pricey compared to several other performance-grade drives, which were faster on some benchmark tests

On our benchmarks, Crucial's M4 drive was appreciably speedy, without ever breaking new ground. If you're looking for well-rounded performance, it's a solid choice, but a bit pricey.

SSD with high capacity and fast speeds at a competitive price.

As we've said before and we'll continue to hammer any chance we can get, the single biggest bottleneck in modern systems is the traditional plattered hard drive, and using an SSD in your system will make such a massive difference that you'll...

"Great SSD, currently being used in my 13-inch 2009 MBP."

Good price, 256GB for around $200. Great speed, even in a SATA II computer. Works with no problems so far. Recovery was a breeze. Snappy and responsive. Great product.

Have yet to see any cons, with the exception being my machine cannot take full advantage of it seeing as the '09 MacBook Pros are SATA II, not SATA III.

"Very buggy if you are replacing a drive."

I was taken in by the size of this drive, as Lenovo only had a 256 GB SDD and I really wanted a 512GB.

Data transfer works well.

Crashes my computer constantly. Quickbooks did not work anymore after the transfer.

"Superior device is a must!"

Before choosing the perfect SSD for my computer, I stumbled upon a variety of choices from top companies that provide the SSD product. I decided to go with Crucial Technology's SSD, and I ultimately made the right decision. I couldn't believe how...

Writes/Reads fast, quiet.

Price be low are better.

If you want to give your notebook or desktop PC a major speed boost, Crucial's m4 256GB solid state drive is a must-have. It's one of the fastest drive's on the market and it'll not only speed up boot-up times if used as a system drive, it'll make your...

Overall, it's not hard to love this drive, even if it is quite a hefty investment. Its 238GB formatted capacity gives it a cost per gigabyte between £1.10 and £1.80 depending on where you buy it. If you've got a high end laptop or desktop and speed is...
