The WD Caviar SE16 400 GB Gets Ready to Face The World

The new WD top model offers neat features and a whopping 400 GB, but little performance improvement over the 320 GB version. How does it compare ...

The WD4000 compares favorably to other WD drives, but remains behind its current competitor from Seagate (7200.8) when it comes to low level performance (except for the access time test.) This makes it rather clear that the next generation hard drives...

Should have known better

I usually only buy products on here with very solid reviews. I was a little iffy on this one, but it was a build for a buddy. I've had good experiences with Western Digital in the past, so I figured it would be fine. Too bad for me and the guy who paid...

None, it was DOA

Upon installing and powering on, this hard drive made a single, loud 'clunk' noise, and then did nothing. The motherboard wouldn't even recognized that it was attached. RMA'ing, and hoping to get one that works

One out of four.

I ordered four of these. They were well packed for delivery. One of these did not work when installed. I am sending it back for replacement.

Might not work

Bought 10 of these

Enterprise Storage, as this drive is, should not fail so quickly. But I suppose this is why we have RAID.

Lots of data, inexpensive price

I bought 10 of these for use in two devices, each setup with a RAID 5 group. This is used as backup storage, mostly for Symantec BESR. I have owned the first set of five drives for 1 year and 5 months. I am starting to see failures already

For an enterprise level drive I expected much more. Especially when I paid around $150 for it just over a year ago! I did put it in a SATA to USB adapter and was able to get it to spin up a couple of times just to have it completely lock up. Way too...

Lasted just over a year in RAID 1 config on i7/Asus machine. I'll give it 2 eggs for its short life since it did arrive working originally

Fell out of RAID when it died forcing the matrix to steal another drive that I use as my internal backup drive. This wiped out alot of stuff but luckily I have a NAS backup for the important data

Poor performance...

I am buying the Caviar Black WD1001FALS instead of these RE3 drives. WD1001FALS does not have the performance problems.

I had put two drives in RIAD0 configuration. The throughput was a meager 50MB/s. With another pair of drives of a different manufacturer, and another pair of WD drives of different type, I get about 200MB/s. The RE3 was bad even as a single drive

Great drives

Running 3 of them in a RAID5 array, with 1 as a hot spare, on a 3Ware 9550 controller. Averaging 175MB/s reads and 215MB/s writes, with plenty of redundancy.

Fast. Got 4 of them refurbished, not a bad one in the lot

Regular price seems pretty high to me - however, I got them on a great sale that was almost 1/2 off, and the price Newegg's running at the moment is almost as good

Try running these without raid maybe? If you understand RAID or SCSI, you would know that it isnt that much faster then 2 hdd's in an SATA 1 and 2

Maybe RAID0 isnt set up right, it isnt the hard drive, it is a combination of either your PSU and RAID0 or RAID0 and MB ; Dont blame a perfectly good Hard Drive when RAID0 is at fault i bet

Reply to David Smith

WD's 1TB Blacks (WD1002FAEX) have a very low failure rate. You'd think that these would have superior reliability.

David Smith: Five of these have died in one PC? That's a statistical improbability ; You may want to look into your PSU being the culprit. Grab a multimeter and check the voltages on the +12v and +5v rails. (Search Google to find out how) Do you have...

6 months no problems

I'm running six of these drives in raid 5 and two in raid 1 via miniSAS Atto R680 controller. One of them in raid 1 is the refurbished one. Often times they run 24 hrs. Never had a problem.

No complaints. It's great when your raid just works like it's supposed to. Mostly forget it's there

None except it looks like these are no longer available new
