Amazon Echo Plus review: Not plus enough

Amazon's mid-range smart speaker comes up just a little short.

Built-in ZigBee radio ; Restores volume-control ring from the original Echo

Doesn’t allow sensors to trigger lights ; No support for Z-Wave smart home devices ; Not a great loudspeaker

If you want an Alexa-powered smart speaker that sounds great, buy the Alexa-powered or pair the far-less-expensive Echo Dot with hardwired or Bluetooth speakers. The Echo Plus has somewhat beefier speakers, it delivers a better sonic performance than...

Amazon Echo, Echo Plus or Echo Spot: Which Alexa smart speaker is right for you?

The answer used to be easy. But we'll help you decide among the dizzying array of Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Spot, Echo Dot, Echo Show and Echo Look.

Recently discontinued, the first-gen Echo was the first smart speaker. We’d seen other voice-controlled computers before—anyone remember ?—but Amazon’s was the first that was actually good for something (even if we dinged its acoustic performance in...

Amazon Echo Plus review: smart home 101

Smart home starter kit

Does all of the things the first Echo did for $30 less ; Can directly control smart home gadgets without a hub ; Makes it very easy to set up new smart home gadgets

Smart home support is still very limited ; Amazon’s other new Echo is even cheaper still ; Routines do not integrate other Amazon products well

Amazon is proud of the fact that it’s constantly iterating on and improving Alexa, and it’s likely that the Echo Plus’ smart home shortcomings with device compatibility and app limitations will be addressed with future updates. But right now, it’s a...

Amazon Echo Plus review: Alexa, is this all you've got?

The Echo Plus is a minor upgrade over the original Echo, with slightly better sound. But its much-touted smart hub feature is pretty limited, and it's not a significant improvement overall for existing Echo owners.

Sounds better than the first Echo ; Has access to thousands of Alexa skills ; Slightly cheaper than before

Smart hub feature is pretty basic ; $100 Echo is a better deal ; Not a huge upgrade for first-gen Echo owners

In many ways, the Echo Plus feels like the true successor to the device that kicked off the whole smart speaker trend. But aside from a slight bump in sound quality and semi-useful smart hub integration, there's not much separating the two. It's pretty...

Amazon Echo Plus Review

Amazon's smart home dream sounds an awful lot like living on the Starship Enterprise, and in that dream the new Echo Plus is there gateway to an automated future. At $149.99, it undercuts the original Amazon Echo it so closely resembles, but counts on...

Alexa is as capable as ever ; Audio quality a little better than standard Echo (2017) ; Zigbee hub gives a taste of the smart home

Audio still isn't as good as we hoped for ; Zigbee-only hub has limited device support ; Alexa app is limited in granular controls

Amazon Echo Plus

The $150 Amazon Echo Plus is a very capable voice-assisted speaker that can't quite replace a dedicated hub if you're serious about smart home automation. That will likely change, but right now, for most people, the $100 Echo is a better bet.

Integrated ZigBee automation hub. Audio has slightly more bass response than the standard Echo. Strong Wi-Fi reception.

Alexa app can't control smart home devices with as much granularity as dedicated apps.

Bottom Line: The $150 Amazon Echo Plus is a very capable voice-assisted speaker that can't quite replace a dedicated hub if you're serious about smart home automation. That will likely change, but right now, for most people, the $100 Echo is a better bet.

Amazon Echo Plus review

Amazon's Echo Plus blasts down the barrier to smart-home entry with the smartest home hub yet

Built-in smart home hub eliminates the need for a bridge between Alexa and your smart home devices ; Seamless pairing with Zigbee compatible smart lights, switches, and plugs ; Three color choices (black, white, and silver) available ; Multi-room audio...

Sound quality of speaker isn’t as rich as we’d hoped it would be ; Doesn’t allow you to connect to other Amazon devices linked to different household accounts

The Echo Plus is an all-in-one device that bridges your smart home products to the home assistant Alexa. We wish the speaker boasted better sound quality, but the Echo Plus is designed for a more streamlined smart home system and not to blow your...

Amazon Echo Plus review

If Alexa taught us anything, it's the importance of good software. In Alexa's case, it's what made the original Amazon Echo ( $185.99 at Overstock.com ) smart speaker so compelling. On its own, the Echo itself was just your average Bluetooth speaker --...

The Echo Plus keeps the original Echo's design (and its beloved volume ring) while adding in an aux-out jack, a Zigbee radio to control smart home devices, and an incremental boost in sound quality. It costs $30 less than the original Echo.

The Plus also costs $50 more than the new Echo, which has everything the Plus has except for Zigbee. The Alexa app isn't the fully capable smart home control center that the Echo Plus needs it to be, at least not yet.

Hold off on the Echo Plus until Amazon improves the Alexa app's smart home controls.

Amazon Echo Plus Review

Retailing for $149.99, and often coming with at least one Philips Hue light bulb, the Echo Plus endeavors to save you over $100 in extra, otherwise necessary equipment.

Built-in Zigbee Hub and included Philips Hue light combine for $150 value ; Zigbee compatible with over 100 devices ; Improved smart device integration and interface within Alexa App ; Alexa’s wealth of over 10,000 app/device integrations (skills) ;...

Alexa search functionality inferior to Google Assistant ; App could use quick toggles for smart home control ; No Z-wave support

Amazon Echo Plus Review: Simplifying the Smart Home

Adding a smart-home hub into a device that's already sitting in the middle of your house was a logical move for Amazon. It gets rid of the extra step of a consumer having to set up a second gadget just so they can control a third. Not only is this a...

Connects to lots of smart bulbs ; Good sound quality ; Easy setup

Very basic smart-home automation ; Same design as original Echo

By adding a smart-home hub into the Alexa-enabled Echo Plus, Amazon is trying to make the smart home more accessible to the masses.
