Amazon Echo review

Since introducing the original Amazon Echo smart speaker in November 2014, Amazon has continued to refresh and expand its lineup of hands-free, voice-enabled Alexa devices. In 2016 the company introduced the smaller-sized Echo Dot, eventually replaced...

Amazon's voice-activated smart home speaker is undeniably futuristic, but it's also practical and accessible. With a rapidly growing slate of features, integrations and use cases, it's easy to get excited about the Echo's potential.

The Echo's sound quality is slightly uneven at times, with weak bass at high volumes. It also can't distinguish between different voices like the Google Home smart speaker can.

More than two years after its debut, the smarter-than-ever Amazon Echo remains one of the best connected home products money can currently buy.

Amazon Echo

The Amazon Echo is so much more than a wireless speaker. It's part voice assistant, part home automation hub, and its abilities continue to expand steadily. And it's a blast to use.

Excellent voice recognition. Works with many third-party devices and services. Regularly expanding support for new features. Fun to use. Solid speaker sound quality.

Speaker distorts at highest volumes. No access to email and messages.

If you're just looking for a speaker, chances are you wouldn't have read this far. Sure, there's really nothing you can do with the Amazon Echo that you can't do with the smartphone in your pocket. Yet there's something here that feels infinitely more...

Amazon Echo review: Betcha can’t buy just one of these voice-activated connected-home controllers

The Echo is so awesome you might want one in every room of your home.

Exceptional voice-recognition capabilities ; Very fast and extremely responsive ; Extremely versatile, offering music playback, connected-home control, weather and traffic reports, and much more ; Very good app support, plus an IFTTT channel

Inferior audio features compared to the least-expensive Sonos speaker ; Flash feature would benefit from additional news sources ; Can’t control Philips Hue lighting scenes

Amazon’s Echo is versatile and powerful; an terrific value all around.

Few people an Echo in their home (although it could be a real boon for the disabled), but it is nonetheless an incredibly fun and useful gadget—especially if you have a connected lighting system. And with support for Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, and Wink,...

Amazon Echo review: listen up

"Alexa, what's the weather today?" "ALEXA! What's the weather today?" "ALEXA WHAT IS THE WEATHER TODAY GODDAMMIT." "Right now, in New York it's 25 degrees with clear skies and sun. Today's forecast...

Fast and simple to interact with ; Impressive mic and hearing range ; Joke-telling game is strong

Way too finicky ; Sometimes Alexa just ignores you ; Needs a real ecosystem outside of Amazon

We spent months living with voice-controlled smart speakers, and we think the Amazon Echo and Google Home are both pretty good, depending on your needs.

Amazon Echo Review: One Smart Speaker

The Amazon Echo adds functions to a wireless speaker that we've never experienced before. It can tell you the weather, add items to a shopping list, search local businesses through, alert you to traffic Yelp and even turn on the lights. The way it ties...

Well-balanced treble, midrange and bass ; Voice control for hands-free use ; Integrated with Amazon Prime Music and Pandora for music streaming over Wi-Fi

Lacks battery ; No speakerphone or auxiliary input

The Amazon Echo can stream music, tell you the weather and help you shop — and it sounds good, too.

Amazon Echo Review

We can recommend the Amazon Echo for its hands-free use and for the services it provides, although not for its sound quality. With its tinny sound, this speaker isn't a great choice to be the center of your audio entertainment. However, the voice...

The Amazon Echo can be controlled completely hands free with voice commands.

It has weak sound when compared to the best wireless speakers in our lineup.

While the voice interaction makes this a unique speaker, low sound quality earns the Echo its low spot in our comparison.

Amazon Echo review: Betcha can’t buy just one of these voice-activated connected-home controllers

Amazon's Echo is the best voice-controlled product that I've seen at the consumer level. It's versatile, powerful, and amazingly quick to recognize your speech and then do something, whether that's answering a trivia question, playing music, giving you...

Inferior audio features compared to the least-expensive Sonos speaker ; Flash feature would benefit from additional news sources ; Can’t control Philips Hue lighting scenes

If I buy an Echo, I won’t take full advantage of its capabilities for a couple of reasons. First, my lighting system is already tied to my home-security system (Z-Wave systems can have only one master). Second, I’ve invested heavily in a Sonos audio...
