Ultimate AV: Anthem AVM 50 surround processor

I go back a bit with Anthem. Years ago, with another publication, the Anthem AVM 20 and PVA 7 pre/pro and power amp combo were offered to me for review. I hadn't sought them out, but I knew the parent company Sonic Frontiers, and was very familiar with...

Blu-ray and HD DVD ready with HDMI processing of 1080p video in all flavors and hi-res multichannel PCM, Superlative, full-featured video processing, Excellent sound quality, Outstanding support through frequent firmware updates, Deep, complex...

Test Bench: Anthem AVM 50 Preamp/Processor and MCA 50 Amplifier

All level trims were at zero, except in subwoofer-related tests, and all speakers were set to "large," subwoofer on. All are worst-case figures where applicable.

Crisp, clean 1080p video upconversion

No direct remote-control access to video features

While the AVM 50's $4,699 price might seem hefty for anything but a huge flat-screen, it's actually two state-of-the-art products in one. That officially qualifies it as a sweet deal.

Low and clear bass ; Crisp Mid range ; excellent high range ; Noise isolation ; Very Comfortable

microphonics to be expected -rustling, thumping noise from the cord

Yamaha EPH-50BL Earphone

They are very good sounding headphones that block out noise extremely well. Bass is rich and mids and highs are fine. It also comes with 0.25" plug adapter, which is handy for using on my receiver, which is also made by Yamaha. They are also fairly...

Cantonman

These are very "bright" headphones. They seem to emphasize the treble and are very clear-toned. Bass output is only slightly skimpy but that could be because of the noticable treble qualities. They reproduce sound from my iPod louder than my other...
