Edifier IF330

Edifier iF330

By Andrew Kliem

Small, video output, low cost, detailed sound

Bass very weak, sound flat, distortion at medium volume, sound needs to be tighter, no remote

A fairly average iPod dock, the Edifier iF330 certainly has a small price tag but it produces fairly poor quality audio with no bass presence and no remote control is included.

Yamaha Soavo 2

Yamaha Soavo 2

By Campbell Simpson

Exacting build quality, polite and measured sound

Slightly bass-shy, quite large

Yamaha's bookshelf-sized Soavo 2 speakers have a very measured sound. You won't be floored by the amount of bass produced, but even at high volumes audio remains very composed and distortion-free.

Kicker iKICK iK500

Capable of amazing volume levels

Heavy, no battery power, pricey

At $US249, it costs more than we would want to spend on a speaker system (especially since it doesn't have a wide range of features), but the iK500 would be perfect for garden parties, barbecues, and house parties - provided that the local authorities ...

Bowers & Wilkins PV1

Bowers & Wilkins PV1

By Campbell Simpson

Powerful, incredible low-frequency kick, compact, great styling

Not as versatile as we would have liked for movies

Even though it's clearly an exercise in contemporary styling, the PV1 is a great sub for music listeners. It's not as fantastic if you watch movies, but it still does an exemplary job.

iHome IH8

IHome iH8

By James Hutchinson

Well-implemented features, decent quality speakers

iPod isn't fully controllable, speakers aren't magnetically shielded

The iH8 provides a fantastic combination clock radio and set of speakers for the iPod. There is little to fault iHome's offering, though we would have liked to see slightly more integration with the iPod's user interface.

Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile

Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile

By Ross Catanzariti

Design and build quality, speakerphone performance, versatility

Average sound quality, hissing evident in Bluetooth mode

It doesn't provide the best sound quality, but for travellers its versatility makes the Pure-Fi Mobile an appealing speaker system.

Creative TravelSound I

Creative TravelSound i80

By James Hutchinson

Unique style, great battery life

Poor sound quality

The TravelSound i80 is a truly portable iPod nano speaker with a long battery life to suit. Nevertheless, its design and portability are let down by poor quality speakers that ruin the overall experience.

Creative I-Trigue 3000i

Creative I-Trigue 3000i

By James Hutchinson

Full integration with iPods and iPhones, bass isn't muddy

Lack of low mid-range, AV out requires specific unbundled cable

The I-Trigue 3000i manages to overcome some of the problems faced by both computer speakers and iPod peripherals. However, it lacks low mid-range sound.

Altec Lansing T612

Altec Lansing T612

By Andrew Kliem

Lively sound, rich and detailed mid-range, great treble, iPhone compatible

Sound too lively for some, bass hollow, sound can be a little disconnected, iPhone implementation needs some work

Another solid MP3 dock from Altec Lansing, the T612 produces extremely energetic audio and works in conjunction with the iPhone. However, users should note that iPhone connectivity could use some work.
