Klipsch HD Theater 500 review

Editors' note: This review has been updated as part of a recent budget speaker roundup and its rating has been changed accordingly.

The Klipsch HD Theater 500 is a compact surround-sound speaker system with four small two-way satellites, a center channel, and a 100-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. It can often be found online for less than $500 and sounds much better than a sound...

While the HD Theater 500 sounds much better than a sound bar, its sound quality is a step behind other budget speaker packages. Also, its speakers' wire spring-clip connectors feel cheap and aren't as secure as we'd like.

The Klipsch HD Theater 500 is a stylish and compact 5.1 speaker system, but better-sounding systems are available at this price.

Review: Klipsch HD Theater 500

Your meal plans may be more Top Ramen than Top Chef these days, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice dinner music too. Klipsch...

Sparkling 5.1-surround sound for small(ish) spaces. Spartan aesthetic also looks slick. Easy, breezy setup

Not an experienced audiophile? Tweaking the subwoofer can be more taxing than a severe IRS audit. 0 is kind of a lot, even though it’s Klipsch

Klipsch HD Theater 500 Speaker System

There are stories we tell over and over again because they never lose their power to teach us something. For example, the story of “The Three Little Pigs” and the big bad wolf teaches us not to risk our survival on houses made of straw or sticks. If...

Klipsch HD Theater 500

We recommend the Klipsch HD Theater 500 for a great combination of durability, sound quality and smart design. If you treat them right, these speakers will wow you for a long time. They may not produce audiophile-quality music, but for home theater...

The subwoofer included in this home theater speaker set produces strong, even bass

Low-quality spring clip connectors take the place of 5-way binding posts

These speakers will live a long time and produce great sound along the way, but don't expect audiophile performance.

Klipsch HD Theater 500 review

The popularity of this type of compact speaker package has mostly been driven by the switch from CRTs to flatscreen TVs.

Good detail and projection; solid, well extended bass

Slightly rough and edgy horn tweeters don’t deliver high-quality audio reproduction

Klipsch HD Theater 500 review

We audition another horn-based, 5.1 compact speaker system and think it's money well spent

Good detail and projection ; solid, well extended bass

Slightly rough and edgy horn tweeters don't deliver high-quality audio reproduction

If you're looking to build an affordable surround sound setup with more quality than an all-in-one system, then partner this with an entry-level AVR and enjoy

Klipsch HD Theater 500 5.1-Channel Speakers

Don't let the price fool you, the HD Theater 500 is a capable surround sound setup.

Pick one up and can feel the quality instantly, telling you all you need to know about their long-term durability. They may be small, but each one is weighty and solid, the sort of build quality that you perhaps wouldn’t expect at this price point....

Klipsch HD Theater 500

On the plus side, Klipsch's horn-loaded driver technology inside the sats means you don't need a lot of power to drive them. The active subwoofer meanwhile features a fetching pica vinyl finish, curved corners and a suitably compact size, and on the...

Compact speakers; looks; great value

Some distortion at high volumes; spring clip terminals

Great Starter

Movies and electronic (techno etc) music sound fantastic on this system. Explosions hit hard, and speech comes across crystal clear. Turn on a rock song, though, and you will be left wondering why you don't even hear notes that hit hard on your car's...

Good starter kit. Bass is impressive, even in a 400 sq ft room. Gets you going with impressive clarity, so you can start watching movies the way they were meant to be heard ; Music can range from good to lacking. Most classical is amazing. I closed my...

I found the system to have very powerful highs and very powerful lows, but almost completely lacking in mid-range punch. The 2.5" woofers just don't push hard enough for a lot of songs in the rock genre. To make matters worse, the sub can't handle a...

Product Specifications

Klipsch's HD Theater 500 is a compact, high-definition 5.1 home theater system that's simple to set up and use. It consists of five speakers - left, center and right front channels with two rear surrounds - and one powered subwoofer. Each main and surround speaker is a sealed enclosure finished in high-gloss piano black with a 2.5-inch IMG woofer and a MicroTractrix Horn-loaded 0.75-inch aluminum dome tweeter inside. The magnetically shielded center channel - so it won't interfere with your TV picture - shares the same durable, high-quality attributes, except it employs dual woofers. The subwoofer delivers class-leading, room-shaking bass thanks to a powerful class D amplifier and an 8-inch driver. Featuring a sleek black pica vinyl finish, this hard-hitter also includes traditional volume, crossover and phase controls, so you can customize the level of bass for your room. Sound accounts for half of your home theater experience, whether you're watching a movie or sporting event - or even playing a video game. Your TV is only one piece of the puzzle. It's the audio that drives the action, creates the mood and brings your video content to life. So, make the HD Theater 500 part of your home entertainment today.
