M-Audio AV 40

Not to sound condescending, but M-Audio's Studiophile AV 40 Desktop Speaker System makes most PC and multimedia speakers seem rather puny by comparison. It's not just their size (the M-Audio speakers resemble desktop studio monitors); if you listen to...

The Studiophile AV 40 is a larger-than-average PC speaker system that makes a bigger-than-average sound; large 4-inch woofer, 1-inch tweeter; 20 watts per speaker; rock solid medium-density fiberboard construction; Bass Boost switch.

Large size (for PC/desktop speakers) may be an issue for some buyers.

M-Audio's Studiophile AV 40 is a PC speaker for music lovers who care more about sound quality than compact size or rock bottom pricing.

"Accurate but trouble-prone"

Precise, accurate on orchestral instrumental sounds. No distortion but somewhat weak on base as would be expected with a two unit system.

After three years, left speaker failed. Based on other reviewers, this is not an isolated problem. It is difficult to find a speaker in this price range that has its qualities, but I will not purchase this brand again.

"These will certainly trump most "PC Speakers""

I was searching for decent enough speakers that would replace my old Creative T20, and I ended up with the AV40 despite heavy consideration between these and the Swan 1080MkII 08. Turns out that these speakers are certainly an upgrade over the T20...

-Clear sound with enough power to fill a small room

-Slightly bulky and can take up some space

"Take your audio to the next level."

These are a revelation coming from high end Altec Lansings. I was worried that they wouldn't sound as great because I have them on stands about 10 feet away. False alarm I do miss the party bass of a dedicated sub on some occasions but 99% of the time...

Very crisp, smooth sound. Much more detail than most PC speakers out there, no matter the cost. Classy, understated looks, smaller footprint than many studio monitor-type speakers.

Not much to improve here other than the matching sub which costs an arm.

"Great clear sound, good price, needs a sub"

Much better sound than the usual PC multispeaker and sub setups. Add a sub and you'll have a better than average sound setup for your pc for about 250.

These sound very clear. They have good highs. They're decently priced at about 160 ish. Auxiliary input and headphone jack.

They're bigger than you might expect for pc speakers. If you're used to having a sub you will probably want to add one to these as the bass is only ok. (I recommend adding a psw10 from polk for 100$). Power switch is on the back. No remote.

"Best PC speakers in the price bracket"

Music type: Hip-hop/Rap, Pop, DnB, R&B, Rock, Classic in the that order of frequency.

Consistent, accurate overal sound. Clean smooth high tones. Crisp mid tones and strong bass resonance.

Physically large footprint

"Fantastic Set, Probably the Best Consumer-Line Speakers"

I've had these speakers for over a year now, and they do everything I could possibly want from a speaker plus more. Listening to a nice 92khz/24bit audio source is fantastic, levels are even all around, and gives that sense of openness to tracks that...

1) All the sound detail of a lower-end professional studio monitor without the extra cost.

Setting up - Finding the best height to put these things at to get the best sound. As well, your environment will come into play.

"One of the best values today in computer speakers"

I hate to give yet another 4 star rating, but perhaps I just have good taste and no a value when I see one. I really do not see many downsides to these speakers, just as most seem to agree.

Very clear. Seems to reproduce sound flatly (a good thing) and accurately

Stands are required for optimal sound or if space is at a premium on your desk.

"Spectacular speakers for the $"

If you're more interested in how much space you can leave open on your desk than you do about providing your ears with superb sound and rich clarity, then these are not the speakers for you. If you DO care more about sound quality, play CDs (not...

Terrific sound quality for the money. Excellent for those spending a lot of time listening to CDs, watching DVDs, NetFlix, etc. from their computer.

None, unless you value your desk space *that* much. Not readily available unless you're an online shopper or live next to Guitar Center.
