Panasonic SC-HTB550 review

Do you want a soundbar? Or a 2.1 system with a standalone processor? Acknowledging that there's gold in them thar TV audio upgrade hills, Panasonic has decided to attack both markets with the SC-HTB550 – a novel package that can either be configured as...

Effective 3D sound processing; goes loud and doesn’t skimp on the slam

Plasticky build quality; rubbish remote control; not good for music

The Panasonic SC-HTB550 brings 3D sound processing to the humble soundbar

Virtual surround sound ; Bluetooth ; Splitable soundbar

Pretty darn ugly ; No USB media reader ; Sub is a bit of a lightweight

Panasonic's flexible SC-HTB550 can be used either as a soundbar or a traditional 2.1 system.

Flexible design ; Crisp dialogue and strong bass ; Easy to set up

Some aspects of the control system could be simpler ; Lacks a proper screen

Some great ideas from Panasonic, but there are more engaging soundbars

Remote-adjustable dialogue and subwoofer levels ; Can be used as a 2.1 set-up ; Good connectivity

Small overall sound ; Could be more spacious ; Subwoofer lacking muscle

So it’s a mixed bag for the Panasonic: the multi-positional speakers are a bonus, and nearly anything is better than the wispy sound from your TV, but there are better-performing soundbars that are far more engaging.

Panasonic SC-HTB550 2.1-channel Soundbar Review

Panasonic combine good looks and flexibility with their 2 in 1 soundbar.

Flexible installation ; Soundbar or stereo configuration ; Wireless subwoofer ; Attractive design ; Bluetooth compatible

Build quality could be better ; Remote is quite basic ; No display on main unit ; Lacks bass presence

Used HDMI cable to connect straight into my SKY box, and worked a treat. Bluetooth to my iphone and ipad works really well and very easy to sync. Looks great, sounds great

Had to go into "Hotel" mode on my Panasonic TV to get the start up to be on the correct HDMI channel, then the SKY controller controls volume correctly. The Sound bar also then powers up and down with the TV being turned off and on

As you get older your high frequency hearing ability decreases and dialogue with background noise (noise meaning any sounds including music) becomes difficult to interpret because the noise masks out the frequencies you have difficulty in hearing in...

None really - it does what it is supposed to do. If I have to think of something then it would be that the amplifier gets quite hot and a bit of air circulation is advised
