Really great sound inclyding crystal clear dialogs (and music in ProLogic II) and excellent imaging (vertical 3-way arrangement, unheard in centers even from the most expensive designs!). Highly recommended. See also my Pioneer S-DF3-K review.

sound quality and value

perhaps looks, you either love or hate it (I love it!), and it is taller than most centers

Product Specifications

One of the ways to separate the hip, happening loudspeaker companies from the ones that don't get it is to look at their center speakers. The coolest companies make three-way center speakers, with a midrange and a tweeter stacked vertically, and a woofer or two added to bring in some bottom. What's so great about that? Simple - in a conventional two-way center speaker, with two woofers and one tweeter, the woofers have to cover a lot of the midrange, too. At such high frequencies, the woofers tend to interfere with each other, producing frequency response errors as you move across the room. Thus, the speaker doesn't sound the same from the center of the couch as it does at the end of the couch. By using an unusual "woofer on top" design, Pioneer was able to bring three-way design into the S-DC1-K. The S-DC1-K is designed to mate with Pioneer's new line of budget stereo speakers, like the S-DF1-K, designed by a talented team of ex-KEF engineers. This may be the best inexpensive center speaker around.
