Pioneer SP-SB23W review

Pioneer was once king of the budget speaker market, offering a host of car and home audio speakers that pumped up the volume for a pittance. However, in more recent years, the company has found its numbers in the entry-level market slipping behind a...

Warm, detailed sound signature ; Musical bass response ; Integrates well with all content ; Convenient setup and design

Bluetooth connection spotty/possible stereo issues ; Treble is slightly tinny on occasion

The system’s rich and clear sound signature, ample stereo spread, and musical low end provided just the right boost of sound quality…

Editors' note : Pioneer has acknowledged that some SP-SB23W units have flawed Bluetooth audio playback and is offering to repair or replace affected units. Read our full story on the issue for more information.

The Pioneer SP-SB23W offers outstanding sound quality for a sound bar, particularly when it comes to the blend between the sub and the main cabinet. Performance is even more impressive considering the size of the tiny wireless subwoofer, which is easy...

The system's style won't wow you and the sound bar's relatively chunky size might block your TV's remote sensor. The included remote is mediocre and there's no front-panel display for visual feedback while making adjustments.

The Pioneer SP-SB23W is the best affordable sound bar if you care about sound quality, with its outstanding sonics making up for some of its design limitations.

Review: Pioneer SP-SB23W sound bar

Wood construction Pioneer sound bar impresses

Wood build for resonance- Good, even volume- High accuracy sound reproduction

Large speaker bar- Problematic installation- Known (fixable) Bluetooth issues

Pioneer has been heavily invested in home audio for decades. Couple that expertise with the predilection for flat screen televisions to have equally flat-sounding speakers, and the fit seems obvious. Couple a television-oriented sound bar with wirele

"Great solution if you're low on space... or commitment"

Consider me (temporarily, at least) one of the latter. I spent a lot of years with a built out home theater system, but after moving to my current house, I realized that setting up that system again was going to be a daunting task due to the way the...

"Good price, sounds great!"

Overall very happy with it and going to buy another one soon.

Easy to hook up.

It's kinda big, it won't fit under the TV,

"High Fidelity at a bargain price."

Great value if you are concerned about sound.

Been through about 5 sound bars.the Sony HTC260 sounded cheap and tinny. The Vizio 42" sounded very good but the volume increments are ridiculous (hit volume up 3 times and it's like a rock concert volume). The Yamaha was decent but no subwoofer.

Not the most attractive looking sound bar

"Outstanding sound quality"

With a functioning bluetooth, this is a great-sounding speaker bar in the low to moderate price range.

Great sound. I like the wood finish.

First batch from August had bluetooth defects. This has been remedied in subsequent production. Somewhat bulky compared to it's peers. Interesting the model released in Europe HTP-SB 510 and the model released back in Japan HTP-SB550 looks great.

"Second to none in sound quality for <$500 sound bars"

This is the type of sound bar you want if you mostly care about the sound and not as much about how well it works with your living room decor. Setup is incredibly easy, although I wish the wireless function of the subwoofer wasn't a requirement. If you...

- Incredible sound for the price

- Bluetooth issue at launch. It's worth waiting for a fix for this issue.

"Defective BlueTooth, very good sound, unattractive"

ALERT! Do not buy this unit until the manufacturer, Pioneer, fixes a defect in the BlueTooth function, which in current units generates only mono sound, not stereo. Check the Pioneer website to determine whether/when the defect is remedied, and make...

Very good sound quality, one of the best I've heard in the sub-$700 range. The small wireless sub-woofer won't shatter any windows, but it has enough punch and fidelity to meet TV/movie/music listening requirements for anyone over age 30.

Manufacturing defect with BlueTooth accommodates only mono, not stereo sound. Unit is larger and bulkier than many other sound bars, and its fake wood-grain surface is most unattractive.
