I bought this Center Channel speaker from a person selling it off of Craigslist for 20.00, and I really don't think he knew what he was doing given the fact that these go for almost 250.00 brand new. The sound that this puts out is similar to that of Polk Audio because it is crisp and bright, but tends to lack in Mid Range effects to a small degree and is not really noticeable to the untrained ear. I matched the center speaker with a pair of Boston Acoustics A40 front speakers, and a 200 Watt Bic America Sub-Woofer and Mirage Surrounds, and a pair of Infinity SAT750'S. I have a Yamaha RXV 2500 driving the system with a couple of Pioneer THX certified Dvd players.
Unless you have excellent Home Theater equipment how can you possibly discern the difference between a mediocre Center Channel to a really good one? Fortunately for me I have a receiver and Dvd players which can reproduce some of the BEST Hollywood George Lucas Reproduction sounds out there, and leading the way with a very ACCURATE voice coil is the Proficient CC550 to play back those sounds.
I think the reason the Proficient CC550 has received 2 bad reviews, is the price they ask for them being in a "HIGH END" demographic, if a more notable Center happens to sound better in it's same price range. I will concede that it is NOT worth the money they ask for it, but it DOES sound a great deal better than the Boston Acoustic VR-10 that is in the same price range and therefore a decent find.
I would ask the former sour puss reviewer to hook that speaker back up to a decent system, and then give an HONEST opinion on what he finds..............
