Sonos PLAYBAR Review

With the prices of large-screen TVs plummeting, there has been a spike in flat TV purchases, and data show that televisions are getting ever bigger. However, many new HDTV owners realize that the s...

At $699, the Sonos PLAYBAR is a very good, somewhat expensive, sound bar. If the price was lower, it would certainly be a very easy recommendation (“no brainer” would comer to mind). But since it’s not, I would urge you to look at your actual needs.

Sonos Playbar review: an excellent (and expensive) home theater addition

More Info Sonos Playbar: a home theater soundbar that wirelessly streams music for $699, we go hands- (and ears) on Sonos Playbar appears at

Simple set up ; Great, room-filling sound for a soundbar ; Top-notch build quality

Expensive ; Mobile app needs a better UI

Sonos' Playbar makes an excellent addition to your living room, but only well-heeled music lovers can afford one.

Sonos Playbar

The Sonos Playbar delivers impressive volume levels and its companion mobile app is very well designed, but this slick soundbar comes with some compromises.

Smooth overall sound quality. Surprisingly effective low-end response given the lack of a subwoofer. Flexible wireless streaming. Doesn't distort on deep bass at high volumes

Requires wired Ethernet unless you already have a Sonos Bridge. No hardware remote control. Highly processed sound isn't for purists

Sonos, perhaps the most established and recognizable name in wireless home audio, has unveiled its first soundbar speaker—and it's a solid performer. The Sonos Playbar ($699 direct) delivers powerful digital surround sound with its included optical...

Sonos Playbar review: wireless audio invades your living room

The simple home stereo is struggling in the digital world. Little black boxes and audio sources are proliferating under the TV, remotes litter the coffee table, and docks clutter the bedroom and...

Ease of setup and use ; Offers true wireless 5.1 ; Fantastic sound for movies and TV

No 3.5mm input ; Apps feel clunky ; Over-reliant on optical audio ; Not ideal for music listening

The Playbar may be the Trojan horse Sonos has needed all along

Sonos Playbar Review

While there are plenty of ways to improve upon the sound coming from your TV's speakers, sound bars are currently the most popular. Today, nearly every major speaker or TV manufacturer has at least one in its lineup, and the once-novel sound bar...

Large, expansive sound field effectively wraps sound around you ; Awesome loudness capability, yet low on distortion ; Warm, easy-on-the-ears sound makes long-term listening a breeze ; Best aesthetic design we’ve seen yet for a soundbar

Pricier than the competition – even pricier with a subwoofer ; Single input woefully limits flexibility

If you don’t need the extra inputs, and streaming music quality, ease of use, and class-leading design are high priorities, the Sonos Playbar earns a solidly enthusiastic recommendation.

Review: Sonos Playbar

It's universally acknowledged that TV speakers suck. And it's widely known that Sonos makes awesome wireless speakers. Light bulb!

Elegant, décor-friendly design. Sounds heavenly. Plays music, too, from all your favorite sources. Optional wireless surround-sound courtesy of Sonos Play:3 speakers

Lacks a dedicated remote. Like all Sonos gear, it’s priced to make you cry. Not much bass, unless you add the company’s 0 subwoofer (more tears). Requires an Ethernet connection or Sonos Bridge

Sonos PLAYBAR Review

Movie and TV audio for music lovers: that's how Sonos describes its new PLAYBAR, the first product from the whole-home audio company to tackle sound that comes with moving pictures, rather than audio for its own sake. Speaker-bars aren't a new concept,...

Sonos took its time creating the PLAYBAR, and that consideration shows both in how it sounds and how easy it is to setup and use. Certainly, at $699/£599/€699 it's expensive when compared to a regular speaker-bar. You can find those for a couple of...
