Yamaha YHT-S401 Sound Bar - A Cut Above the Rest

A step up from older models, the Yamaha YHT-S401 is one of the latest mid-level sound bar offerings in the market. Can it deliver on features, design, performance and value to convince us it is a worthy successor to the excellent YHT-S400?

Excellent performance - neutral/natural tone4 HDMI ports providedOption to add extra surround speakers

No wireless capabilitiesReceiver unit is heavy and a bit bulkyLacks cinema feel when playing movies

Yamaha YHT-S401

Yamaha has a strong tradition in soundbars, but this isn't its finest by a long stretch

Weighty bass; lots of control and precision; good build

Thin vocals; compressed treble; not wholly intuitive to use

While the S401 doesn’t aim to offer true surround sound, it still feels small scale, and lacks the sonic width and scale we’d like.

Meaty quality sound but surround effect not exciting

Adds good weight to movies compared to the built in speakers on my Samsung d6530 smart tv. Having never tried a soundbar before I was left disappointed with the 'pretend' surround effect. Playing with the options hasn't added much.

First off, I didn't actually buy via Amazon as I wanted to see such an expensive piece of kit before I bought it, so a trip to Richer Sounds in Cambridge and a few pounds more (I don't believe it's right to take up the shop assistants time and then buy...
