Acer Iconia W4 review: After last year’s rocky start, this tablet is finally a good buy

It's a big step up from the original W3, though other than an HDMI-out port it doesn't stand out from the crowd.

Micro HDMI port ; Good benchmark performance

Mediocre display ; Thick and heavy compared to much of the competition ; Comparatively low battery life

Acer’s Iconia W4 is a big step up from its predecessor, but it doesn't stand out among the current crowd of 8-inch Windows tablets.

Acer ICONIA W4-820-2882

Acer's first attempt at an 8-inch Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W3, worked well enough for an early example of the style, but it was soon eclipsed by newer models from Dell, Lenovo, and others with better design, features, and performance.

Acer's Iconia W4 has excellent battery life for an 8-inch Windows tablet; plenty of ports for a slate, including HDMI, SD card, and USB, as well as a decently large 64GB SSD.

The clunky plastic design does the W4 no favors, and it's thicker and heavier than many other Windows tablets. The screen resolution feels dated compared to a growing number of HD-or-better tablets.

The 8-inch Acer Iconia W4 has a few advantages that help it stand out from a crowd of similar devices, including great battery life and enough ports to support basic productivity. It's also much better -- and less expensive -- than last year's W3...

Acer Iconia W4-820-2466

The Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 is a bright, compact 8-inch Windows 8 slate tablet. With a full copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student and almost 10 hours of battery life, it's a viable alternative to carrying an ultraportable laptop to class or meetings.

In-Plane Switching (IPS) screen. Micro-HDMI port. Includes Microsoft Office Home and Student. Almost 10 hours of battery life

A bit pricier than rivals. No GPS. No 3G/4G/LTE. Lots of bloatware

The Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 ($379.99, as tested) is an entry-level Windows 8 slate tablet that is small enough to carry around while you attend a day's worth of classes or business meetings. It's not quite a laptop replacement until you add extra...

Very capable win8 tablet

The back is plastic and doesn't feel very solid, but most people will probably put this into a case or cover so the thin plastic back is actually a reasonable design choice I think. I got this device just to see if I liked and would be happy using win8...

I have the 32GB version of this tablet and it has FAR exceeded my expectations. The quad core atom cpu is "fast enough", and running one or two things at once like office one note plus email, or email plus word, or email and a web browser, works great...

I still don't like windows 8 after setting up this tablet for my own use. It's clunky and obscures features without making anything easier to use, and Microsoft STILL hasn't figured out how to make windows work on a small screen. But that's a mark...

Nice tablet

Get a case for it. It can be slippery. You've been warned.

Works perfectly so far. Wireless works well. Price is good

Screen gets smudged but that's with all touchscreens

Amazing little tablet

This little gem is smaller than an iPad 2, but can do so much more. I can run desktop applications and hook up USB devices such as keyboard, mice, device programmers (I'm a developer). Additionally, the unit has a MicroSD for memory expansion. At first...

Brilliant screen. Can run legitimate desktop applications

Nothing major

Win8 tablet that comes complete for use.

Very affordable Win8 compact tablet that comes with HDMI output as very few in market today. The only complain I have is that I could not find any decent or dedicate cover to tablet in US. May have to order from Europe. This product is... responsive...

HDMI output and Win8 button in front

Can't find a dedicate cover for unit
