Surface Pro 3 Review

The third time's the charm they say, and it is well known that if Microsoft works long enough on a product, they'll get it right. When the Surface Pro 3 launched, that's exactly what I thought: finally, there's a Windows tablet that is barely heavier...

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review: Impressive hybrid tablet, but keyboard should be bundled

If you need a Windows 8.1 computer that's flexible enough to be a tablet, a laptop and even -- if you add the optional docking station -- a desktop PC, then the Surface Pro 3 manages the trade-offs as well as anything on the market. It won't be for...

High-quality 12-inch screen ; Slimmer and lighter than the 10.6-inch Surface Pro 2 ; Multi-angle kickstand ; Improved Type Cover keyboard and touchpad ; Good performance and battery life ; Useful Surface Pen/OneNote integration

Type Cover is an extra-cost option ; Surface Pen has no proper 'home' on the tablet ; Only one USB 3.0 port ; Lacks a full-size SD card slot ; Runs warm and activates fan more than previous model

As a hybrid tablet/laptop, the Surface Pro 3 is, generally, very impressive. The design changes Microsoft has implemented are largely successful — a bigger 3:2 aspect-ratio screen, a thinner and lighter chassis, useful stylus/OS integration, an...

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Review

I can't believe it's only been sixteen months since I published our review of the original Microsoft Surface Pro. It feels like longer but that's likely because Surface RT made its sale debut a few months prior to that, and both devices were announced...

When I reviewed the first Surface Pro I was intrigued by the idea, but felt it needed a few more iterations to get to the right point. In less than two years what we have in front of us looks very different than Microsoft's original vision for the...

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review: A legitimate work PC in tablet clothing

A number of small changes make a world of difference. In all, Microsoft has made the choice between a traditional notebook and a Windows tablet far more difficult.

Larger screen offers 38 percent more real estate for getting work done ; New Type Cover is much more stable than previous models ; Battery life now quoted at eight, not six hours

Prices may still give one pause, especially versus a notebook ; Microsoft eliminated free OneDrive cloud storage from Surface Pro 3 ; Stylus holder is awkwardly placed

Microsoft's Surface lineup just keeps getting better and better, with an improved screen for desktop use and an upgraded Type Cover for the road.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review

Imagine if you had a time machine that could send you back exactly 13 years. The rules of time travel don't let you change the past, but they do allow you to ask one question of a single person (time travel is, after all, very complicated). If your...

Thin and light ; Greatly improved kickstand ; High-resolution screen

So-so battery life ; Some software bugs ; No full SD card slot

Surface Pro 3 review: Has Microsoft finally made a tablet to replace your laptop?

It didn't last long, but there was a moment earlier this week when I was sure Microsoft would unveil its own laptop. At a press event, Surface chief Pano

Remarkably thin and light for a machine with laptop guts ; Easier to use as a standalone tablet ; Fast performance ; Gorgeous, high-res display ; Keyboard can be propped up at a more comfortable angle

Flimsy keyboard is inferior to what you'd get on a proper laptop; worse, it doesn't even come in the box ; Not that comfortable to use in the lap ; Middling battery life

The Surface Pro 3 is Microsoft's biggest and best tablet yet, but it needs a better keyboard to truly replace your laptop.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review

If at first you don't succeed, get better and keep trying. This is the tactic that helped Microsoft win a near monopoly in the PC market, own the gaming space with Xbox, and become the default office suite around the world. Microsoft hasn't lit up the...

Thinnest, lightest Core Intel tablet we've seen ; Great keyboard ; Sharp 12-inch screen works well as a laptop display ; Comfortable touchpad ; Stylus works great ; MicroSD card support

Still not comfortable in your lap ; Too heavy as a tablet ; Windows 8 desktop apps don't scale well with resolution ; Windows 8 still a disjointed experience ; Proprietary charging port ; OS takes up 20GB of free space

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 wants to be everything to everyone, but it’s not there yet. It sacrifices tablet features to be a good laptop, and laptop features to be a good tablet, but ends up somewhat disappointing on both ends.

Surface Tension

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 can probably replace your laptop. The big question is: Are you willing to pay the price and make some compromises in order to let it? The latest productivity-minded tablet PC out of Redmond is an outstanding piece of...

Incredibly thin, light, and fast-bootable for a full-tilt Windows computer. Forget apps; it runs full-desktop software. Durable build and attractive physical design. Its 12-inch, high-resolution touchscreen is great for watching movies and working in...

Hardware is a bit too big and heavy to use as a handheld tablet. Pricey compared to laptops with similar specs. App ecosystem lags behind those of iOS and Android. Type Cover should be included with the tablet, not sold as a $130 extra. Most Type Cover...

Microsoft Surface Pro 3

Tablets are great for consuming entertainment, while laptops and other full PCs are required to actually create those works, or so the conventional wisdom goes. Some substitute the charged word "productivity" for creation, but the pitch is the same....

The Surface Pro 3 is thinner and lighter than the previous two versions, despite having a larger 12-inch display and higher screen resolution. A new kickstand makes it easier to set up and use, and the keyboard cover remains a best-in-class example....

That excellent keyboard cover is not included in the base price, and its improved touchpad still doesn't measure up. The chassis lacks pen storage, and even with tweaked kickstand and keyboard hinges, the Surface Pro 3 still doesn't fit perfectly on...

While the new Surface Pro 3 is Microsoft's best PC to date, it's more successful as a tablet than a laptop replacement.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3

With its 12-inch, high-resolution display, full-friction kickstand, and Surface Pen, Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 tablet aims to be the only mobile PC you need. But will you ditch your laptop? We're not so sure.

Clear, bright, 12-inch, 2,160-by-1,440-resolution display. 10-finger multi-touch support. Infinitely adjustable, full-friction kickstand. Pressure-sensitive stylus included

Heavy and bulky for a slate tablet. Type Cover costs $130 extra. Integrated pen storage is flimsy. Only one USB 3.0 port. Kickstand still digs into your legs when used in your lap. Doesn't work with last-generation Surface accessories. Performance is...

Touted by Microsoft as the single-device replacement for a laptop and a tablet, the larger Surface Pro 3 ($1,299 as tested) is only partially successful as the ultimate mobile PC. Sure, it is a much better laptop replacement than previous Win 8 slate...
