Face Off: Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Core i7 vs. Surface Pro 4 Core i5 vs. Surface Pro 4 Core m3

Same face, faster hardware. Is the highest-end Surface Pro 4 really worth the investment? We give you the raw benchmarks for you to decide on your own.

no major throttling issues, stronger GPU performance, calibrated display, faster SSD performance

only a slight increase in CPU performance over Core i5, shorter battery life, active cooling system, minor backlight bleeding

The Surface Pro 4 Core i7 SKU provides only marginally faster CPU performance over its Core i5 counterpart. For word processing and browsing, the performance difference will be negligible to most users.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Core m3) Tablet Review

Fourth Time's a Charm. The highly-anticipated fourth rendition of Microsoft's Surface Pro is finally here, and it brings some valuable refinements. Thanks to a low-power Core m3 CPU, our review unit is completely devoid of moving parts—making this more...

gorgeous display panel with excellent brightness, contrast, and color rendition, passively-cooled m3 SoC and thus practically silent, vastly-improved Type Cover with great keyboard and touchpad, revised Surface Pen is terrific and included, fantastic...

only one USB 3.0 port; no USB Type-C, no maintenance or upgrades possible, lap usage is still not comfortable compared to a conventional laptop, pricey, especially with Type Cover considered, NVMe SSD performance correction requires manual driver...

The quest for more power is enticing, but it’s not always the most practical of efforts. As we often seek to remind our readers, it is instead the balance of the different elements of the equation which defines a truly great mainstream device. That’s...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Core m3) First Impressions

Tablet meets notebook. Finally, we have Microsoft's latest model, the Surface Pro 4, under review. In response to many readers' requests, we will share our first impressions and compare it to its Surface Pro 3 predecessor as well as the brand new...

We only have a few measurements of the Surface Pro 4 available, but display and emissions are slightly better than the predecessor's. It remains interesting to see how the device will perform in our performance tests and how long its realistic battery...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Core i5, 128 GB) Tablet Review

One step forward, two steps back? Who can benefit from the more powerful i5 version? How big is the difference compared to the Core m3 and how does the 12-inch device hold up against regular notebooks? Our performance update will provide the answers.

brightness and contrast, restrained fan control, improved Type Cover, reworked Surface Pen (inlcuded), sophisticated build quality and appealing design, high system performance, surprisingly powerful integrated GPU, no throttling in practice, much...

comparatively short battery runtimes, only 1x USB 3.0; no USB-C, no maintainability (clean the fan?), very warm surfaces under load, high price

Microsoft makes it actually pretty easy for the customer: The prices for all versions of the Surface Pro 4 are quite high, the m3 version (here in review) is almost as expensive as the comparable Core i5 model with a 128 GB SSD. We now know the reason...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 review

The Surface Pro 4 is the best 2-in-1 PC we've ever tested.

The Surface Pro 4 is a microcosm of the change Microsoft is trying to spur inside its own walls. Time and time again, it missed the opportunity to leap on a new trend in consumer technology. But not with Surface. This time, Microsoft is a leader. It’s...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 review: It's faster, it's better, and it has more competition

Microsoft re-engineers the Surface Pro 4 tablet for performance, adding a new Intel Skylake processor, an improved Type Cover, and even a better Surface Dock.

New Intel Skylake processor dramatically increases performance ; Redesigned Type Cover more closely approximates laptop keyboard ; New Surface Dock is now semi-portable

Battery life is slightly lower than Surface Pro 3 ; New Surface Pen tends to slide off tablet ; The "curse of the missing cursor" still rears its head occasionally

The combination of an Intel Skylake chip, a new Type Cover keyboard and faster SSD speed help push the Surface Pro 4 into a higher echelon of performance.

Surface Pro 4 review: Yes, it can really replace your laptop

The Surface Pro 4 builds on the best parts of the Surface Pro 3, and it finally delivers a solid typing experience with the revamped Type Cover (which is unfortunately sold separately). It's the ideal hybrid tablet in practically every way -- it's as...

Works well as both a tablet and a laptop ; New Type Cover and Surface Pen are massive improvements ; Still pretty thin and light for the equivalent of an ultraportable

Mediocre battery life ; Type Cover is an additional $130

The Surface Pro 3 was a sign that Microsoft's crazy hybrid tablet experiment might actually have legs. The Surface Pro 4, on the other hand, is the company's Surface dream made real. Everything Microsoft promised at that surprise Surface unveiling in...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

The Surface Pro 4 is the best version of Microsoft's tablet yet, with a stellar display, snappy performance, and more than 10 hours of battery life. With Windows 10, the Surface Pen, and optional Type Cover, it can replace your laptop.

Sharp, vibrant touch display. Full-friction, adjustable kickstand. Improved Surface Pen and Type Cover from the previous iteration. Strong battery life in testing

Pricey. Type Cover sold separately. Still only one USB port

The Microsoft Surface line of tablets has been fairly divisive; for every evangelist there are plenty of skeptics who doubt the device can truly replace a laptop. Microsoft is forging on with the fourth iteration regardless, building the Surface Pro 4...

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 review

For three years, Microsoft has been trying to convince us that a tablet can replace our laptops. Throughout three major design iterations, that's been the driving message behind the Surface. Last...

Fast performance ; Lightweight and portable design ; Improved typing experience

Awkward on a lap ; Pricey ; Windows 10 is still buggy

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 review

After years of development and millions of advertising dollars spent to convince us that a tablet could plausibly replace a laptop, Microsoft finally delivered the goods with the Surface Pro 4 . Equipped with robust processing power, a perfectly sized...

The Surface Pro 4 fits a larger screen with a higher resolution into a slightly slimmer body than last year's model. The pen and keyboard cover are also improved, and this is one of the first mobile systems shipping with Intel's latest processors.

Microsoft still refuses to include the Type Cover keyboard by default, forcing a separate purchase. Battery life still isn't enough for a full day.

A host of small refinements cements the Surface Pro 4's position as the best-in-class Windows tablet -- so long as you're prepared to pay extra for the required keyboard cover accessory.
