Toshiba Encore review: an 8-inch Windows tablet that struggles to stand out

Toshiba is no stranger to Windows tablets, but what we've seen to date has typically been targeted at businesses or has otherwise been... limited. In tha

Comfortable to hold ; Bright display ; Includes a micro-HDMI port -- a rarity on 8-inch Windows tablets

No clear edge over the competition ; Finicky hardware buttons ; Terrible rear camera

The Encore is a jack-of-all-trades, and master of none; while there are few things it does badly, it's not so good in any one area that you'd choose it over other small Windows tablets.

Toshiba Encore

The Toshiba Encore, the company's first 8-inch Windows tablet, looks pretty good with solid performance, decent battery life, and an affordable price.

Solid performance from fourth-generation Atom processor. Has 32GB of internal storage. Clear, responsive touch display. Decent battery life

Limited port selection

Laptops have always been portable and Windows-based hybrids and tablets have begun to offer more mobility than laptops past, but even the lightest 13- or 14-inch system is a bit too big to really use when you're walking down the street or hopping into...

Toshiba Encore 8 ( 32GB)

If not for its annoyingly bulky design and slightly expensive price, the Toshiba Encore 8 would be your best option for a small Windows 8.1 tablet. As it stands, the Dell Venue 8 Pro is lower priced, thinner, and lighter.

The Toshiba Encore 8 runs Windows 8.1, boasts zippy performance, and has a microSD storage expansion slot.

The design is bulkier and heavier than most other small tablets. With no keyboard accessory, desktop mode is a headache to navigate.

The Toshiba Encore 8 offers a lot for its price, but the more appealing Dell Venue 8 Pro is a cheaper and sleeker alternative.

Toshiba Encore

The Toshiba Encore delivers speedy performance, handy apps and more ports than other compact Windows 8.1 tablets, but it's bulkier.

Speedy performance; Useful Toshiba apps; Long battery life; MicroHDMI port

Heavier than competitors; Screen not as bright as other tablets

The Toshiba Encore is a speedy Windows 8.1 tablet with handy apps, good performance and long battery life. This is also the only tablet in its class with a microHDMI port. However, the Encore has a bulkier design and a dimmer screen than the Lenovo...

Toshiba Encore Windows 8 Tablet Review

When it comes to 8-inch Windows tablets, the release of Windows 8.1 has seen many companies try their hands at crafting the perfect tablet. Today we check out Toshiba's Encore tablet that packs a 1280x720 HFFS LCD display, Intel Bay Trail internals and...

Good performance from Intel's Bay Trail SoC. Surprisingly great camera for a tablet. Windows 8.1 has a strong feature set

Chubby, uninspiring design. Disappointing display resolution. The Windows desktop is tricky to use on a small screen.

The Toshiba Encore packs a sizable 19.5 watt-hour battery, which should be more than enough to see it through a regular day’s worth of usage. Unlike smartphones, the battery life of a tablet is rarely a concern, although it’s never a bad thing to see a...

Toshiba Encore review

The 8-inch tablet market is full of a raft of devices to choose from, many of which double-up as laptop alternatives with keyboard dock and stylus inputs. Not so the Toshiba Encore, a full Windows 8.1 device that is just that; no additional bells and...

Affordable, full Windows 8.1 tablet, microSD slot and micro HDMI port, good screen viewing angles, ample screen brightness

Just fails to stand out, no USB port, performance can be slow, some bloatware, no stylus support, not most responsive touchscreen

Toshiba Encore Windows 8.1 tablet

Toshiba's 8in Windows 8.1 tablet offers a very good overall user experience

Swift performance ; Feels good in the hand ; HDMI output and microSD card storage slot ; Good battery life

Buttons are a little too shallow ; Brightness didn't always work well ; Tight microSD card slot ; Awkward to charge

Toshiba's Encore offers a much better experience than previous low-power, Windows 8 tablets we've tested, and we recommend it if you're in the market for a Windows-based tablet device. At 8 inches, it can be a little awkward to use, especially when...

Toshiba Encore Windows 8 tablet (preview)

The Toshiba Encore is an 8in tablet that runs the full version of Microsoft's Windows 8.1 operating system

Runs full version of Windows 8.1 ; Competitive price ; Fast boot times

Screen isn't very high res ; No full-sized USB port

The Toshiba Encore is a competitively priced 8in tablet that runs the full version of Microsoft's Windows 8.1 operating system.

Toshiba Encore WT8-A-102 review

With still-born Windows RT for tablets now all but laid to rest, Toshiba elected to install regular Windows 8 for Intel on the Encore. Powering the Encore is a low-power Intel Atom processor, the latest quad-core version codenamed Bay Trail, with which...

Just £250 for a portable PC that can run Windows may seem like an attractive idea, but our experience did not back up that proposition. Toshiba has used a cheap and slow processor to hit both price point and thermal design constraints, making a tablet...
