Sony Bravia KDL-40HX803 review

When we first heard that there were going to be "3D Ready" TVs coming from Sony we audibly groaned. "HD Ready" caused plenty of confusion a few years ago. With a band of "3D Ready" TVs are we going to see the same confusion? The HX803 is one such set:...

Excellent handling of HD and SD content, XMB, Bravia Internet Video

2D to 3D conversion isn't great, viewing angle not great, price when you consider you have to buy the accessories

Our final impression on 3D from the HX803 is that the ad-hoc approach using conversion from 2D to 3D leaves a lot to be desired; watching content designed for 3D makes a much better impression. Overall it is a great offering from Sony, even if it lacks...

The screen stands straight on the pedestal or can be tilted to suit your viewing habits

BD deck is brilliant value for money; 3D upgrade is a sensible option; Solid HD performance

Screen is clearly built to a budget; Motion blur evident; 2D-to- 3D conversion unconvincing

A Home button summons the main Xross user interface, while Options pulls in a complete list of options from the right hand side. The Input button pulls in a map of sources from the left

While the majority of 3D TVs you can buy come with the transmitter that synchronises the active shutter glasses integrated into the TV, with the KDL-40HX803 you get a separate transmitter unit. This plugs into the rear of the TV and sticks on top of...

An excellent 2D TV with an amazing internet portal, but 3D suffers from crosstalk.

As a 2D LED LCD television, it's excellent, but if you're interested in 3D, this 40in set becomes a more considered purchase.

Looked at as a 2D TV - which is actually what it is in its 'out of the box' state - the 40HX803 is pretty excellent, producing arguably the best pictures we’ve seen from an edge LED TV to date. So if you're not interested in 3D, feel free to buy a...

Sony have produced a decent all round TV which has one of the best LCD implementations of 3D technology to date ..

Picture quality, one of the better LCD 3D implementations

3D 'Crosstalk

Sony are just about managing to keep up with the likes of Samsung when it comes to well performing competitively priced LCD TVs across the range.

Bright sharp pictures with good black levels ; HDMI control of external devices works well ; Internet connect features are nice including the BBC iPlayer

Some backlight bleed can be seen at the edges under certain circumstances ; Sound is not great but if you are buying a 46" TV then a good seperate surround system is essential to complement the viewing experience

Picture quality very good, and lots of adjustment possible ; Every AV input can have its own picture settings

Sound quality not brilliant, only OK, but I guess most people buying a TV like this would have an external surround sound ; Doesn't automatically switch to AV inputs, except for other Sony products

I bought my TV with a price match so it was really good value! The picture is pin sharp but you really do need a sound system rather the on-board speakers

Why are the 3D glasses so expensive and why is the 3D transmitter no built into the system??? Come on Sony you are suppose to be the leader
