LG 50PS80

Superb suite of interactive features including Netflix, Vudu, Yahoo Widgets, and YouTube; accurate color; extensive picture controls including a unique Picture Wizard; solid connectivity with four HDMI and one PC input; beautiful styling

Produces relatively light black levels; cannot properly process 1080p/24 content with consistency; exhibits some temporary image retention; no S-Video input

Despite image quality a notch or two below competing plasmas, the LG PS80 series will win over shoppers who prioritize built-in video streaming.

Envizen Digital Duo Box Pro ED8850A

Affordable, compact portable digital TV/DVD player; 7-inch wide-screen display and built-in DTV tuner; clear TV picture quality when you can get a signal; memory card slot for viewing video, music, and image files; DivX playback support; remote, car ...

Generic styling; cheap look and feel; resolution could be higher; external antenna required for DTV reception

The generic-looking Envizen ED8850 isn't going to win any design awards, but its built-in DTV tuner and DivX support sets it apart from other run-of-the-mill portable DVD players.

Vizio VF551XVT

Inexpensive for a local dimming LED-based LCD; can produce extremely deep black levels; less blooming than many local dimming models; relatively accurate color; solid dejudder processing; plenty of connectivity with five HDMI and one PC input; energy ...

Backlight fluctuates with program content; below-average shadow detail; fewer picture controls than some high-end HDTVs; ho-hum styling

Sure, it has a few flaws, but nothing fatal prevents the local dimming, LED-backlit Vizio VF551XVT from exhibiting excellent LCD picture quality for the buck.

Black levels not as deep as LED and some non-LED-based LCDs ; less-accurate grayscale ; glossy screen reflects ambient light ; minor backlight uniformity issues

The Sharp LC-LE700UN's LED backlighting doesn't elevate its picture quality beyond the LCD norm, but does help make it the most efficient TV we've ever tested.

Samsung Luxia B8000 Series LED TV ( 40", 46", 55" )

Produces relatively deep black levels ; mostly accurate color ; very good dejudder processing ; sleek styling with 1.2-inch thick panel ; extensive feature set with Yahoo Widgets, network streaming, and lots of built-in content ; energy-efficient

Expensive ; less uniform screen than other LCDs ; poor off-angle viewing ; lower contrast in dark scenes ; shiny screen can cause reflections in bright rooms ; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern ; scarce analog video inputs

The expensive, stylish Samsung UNB8000 series has its share of picture quality drawbacks, but a firmware update helps, and the thin frames are worth serious bragging rights.
