Sharp LC 46SE94U

Inexpensive for an LCD with LED backlighting ; extremely energy efficient ; effective video processing that can separate antiblur and dejudder functions ; intriguing selection of interactive widgets ; superb built-in support including live help with ...

Black levels not as deep as LED and some non-LED-based LCDs ; less-accurate grayscale ; glossy screen reflects ambient light ; minor backlight uniformity issues

The Sharp LC-LE700UN's LED backlighting doesn't elevate its picture quality beyond the LCD norm, but does help make it the most efficient TV we've ever tested.

Deeper black levels than any HDTV available aside from Pioneer Kuro ; solid shadow detail ; reduced blooming compared with other local dimming LED-based LCDs ; accurate, highly saturated color ; excellent video processing with adjustable dejudder ; ...

Expensive ; poor off-angle viewing ; some blooming effects ; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern ; glossy screen reflects ambient light

It costs a mint, but Samsung's local dimming, LED-based UNB8500 series delivers the best picture quality of any LCD we've tested.

Samsung Luxia B8000 Series LED TV ( 40", 46", 55" )

Produces relatively deep black levels ; mostly accurate color ; very good dejudder processing ; sleek styling with 1.2-inch thick panel ; extensive feature set with Yahoo Widgets, network streaming, and lots of built-in content ; energy-efficient

Expensive ; less uniform screen than other LCDs ; poor off-angle viewing ; lower contrast in dark scenes ; shiny screen can cause reflections in bright rooms ; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern ; scarce analog video inputs

The expensive, stylish Samsung UNB8000 series has its share of picture quality drawbacks, but a firmware update helps, and the thin frames are worth serious bragging rights.

Panasonic TC G10 Series Plasma TV (42", 46", 50")

Superb black-level performance with excellent shadow detail ; highly accurate primary colors and grayscale in THX mode ; great color saturation ; uses less power than previous 1080p plasmas ; VieraCast provides access to select Internet services

Less-accurate secondary colors of magenta and cyan ; slight yellowish tinge and limited light output in THX mode ; skimpy picture controls ; still less efficient than comparable LCDs

Panasonic's 54-inch TV-P54G10 offers superb image quality, plenty of features and great value, making a strong bid for your big-screen buck.

Sony Bravia KDL-W5100 Series LCD TV (40", 46", 52")

Reproduces a relatively deep shade of black ; generally accurate color ; good dejudder processing in Standard mode ; extensive feature set with Yahoo Widgets and built-in streaming-video options including Amazon Video on Demand and soon Netflix ; ...

Expensive ; benefits of 120Hz difficult to discern ; cannot separate dejudder and antiblur modes ; some screen uniformity issues ; dark areas tinged blue ; most free, streaming-video options not compelling

With a full suite of interactive features as well as solid picture quality, the Sony KDL-W5100 series might be worth the higher price to streaming video fans.

Toshiba Regza SV670 Series LCD HDTV ( 46", 55" )

Costs less than most LED-based LCDs with local dimming ; delivers deep black levels ; relatively accurate color ; extensive picture adjustments ; can separate antiblurring and dejudder functions ; plenty of connectivity with four HDMI and one PC input ...

Blooming more noticeable than on other LED-based LCDs ; backlight fluctuates ; poor off-angle performance ; glossy screen reflects ambient light ; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern

Albeit slightly less impressive than other LED-based LCDs with local dimming, the Toshiba SV670U also costs less and still gives great blacks.

Samsung PN-B850 Series Plasma HDTV ( 50", 58" )

Striking design with 1.2 inch-thick panel ; reproduces deep black levels ; accurate color with superb saturation, properly handles 1080p/24 sources ; extensive feature set with Yahoo widgets, network streaming and built-in content ; solid connectivity ...

More expensive than thicker plasma HDTVs ; no S-Video inputs

With picture quality that matches its less-expensive brother but not the best of the stiff competition, the main appeal of the Samsung PNB850/860 series is based on its sleek, ultrathin panel.
