LG 65LA970W review

With its slim bezel, classy stand and cool motorised drop-down soundbar, LG's 65LA970 is a really handsome TV, and it produces some great pictures across SD, HD and Ultra HD. Its images on sports footage are marred, however, by banding during camera...

Great looking design ; Cool motorised soundbar ; Really engaging passive 3D pictures ; Deep black levels ; Good smart TV system

Only three HDMI ports and none support HDMI V2.0 ; More expensive than most of its rivals ; Not much benefit to 4K resolution at this screen size ; Banding from the backlight is intrusive on sports footage

First Review: LG enters the 4K fray and it's another outstanding entry

Arguably the best native UHD picture quality to date ; Fun 3D picture quality ; Excellent sound quality

Limited effective viewing angle ; Only three HDMIs, and none are built to the latest HDMI spec ; 500 dearer than some rivals

The set’s contrast controls need to be handled with care too, but this is best addressed in the picture quality section.

The picture doesn't have the impact of the top 4K TVs, but it's still a fantastic watch

Vibrant, lively UHD and Full HD picture ; Good black depth ; Interesting speaker design

Colours can appear overcooked ; Struggles when upscaling SD ; Limited catch-up TV

Overall, then, it’s a mixed bag for the LG 65LA970W. The 4K footage is an inevitable eye-opener, but other 4K TVs we've seen do better with detail and depth.
