Though not as flashy as most competitors, this plasma panel offers serious performance for videophiles.

The PX-42XR3A may offer too few amenities to satisfy many consumers. But its great image quality and low price make it a fine choice for people who want to hook up their set to an external HDTV tuner.

NEC Plasmasync 42XR3 42 HDTV

This is the panel for image geeks. In our side-by-side review of eight 42-inch plasma sets, NEC's PX-42XR3A placed second for overall picture quality (behind the Philips 42PF9966/37). But it blew away all competitors for HDTV display.

Plus, the menus offer a high level of controllability. For instance, the PX-42XR3A is the only one of the eight TVs we reviewed to include a gamma control, which lets you adjust the rate at which brightness ramps up from dark to light and is helpful...

This is the panel for image geeks. It has very good image quality, and outstanding HDTV display.

Great image quality, light, minimalist

Lacks detail in some areas, doesn't include speakers, no HDMI connection

The PX-42XR3W may offer too few amenities to satisfy many consumers. But its great image quality and low price make it a fine choice for people who want to hook up their set to an external HDTV tuner.

NEC is one of the biggest plasma manufacturers around. But while its screens have successfully graced exhibition halls, boardrooms and other corporate occasions for some time now, they have never quite taken off with home cinema fans - perhaps because...

HD ready

Disappointing performance

HD-ready and with often enjoyable images at a realistic price, the PX-42XR3G is a step in the right direction. But we still feel that NEC needs to put a bit more effort into making its screens into movie stars

NEC 42XR3 review

NEC's plasmas offer superb picture quality, but they demand a price that's just too high to justify. Without a Freeview tuner or a Scart input, the focus of NEC's 42XR3 is squarely on the future of high definition, alienating those without a budget for...

Picture quality ; Understated style ; High-definition ready

High price ; No RGB Scart input

The 42XR3's speakers are pretty weak when you bear in mind the action movies you'll want to show off this baby with, but they manage to cope admirably. They convey plenty of vocal clarity, and while they may not be the punchiest of speakers, you can...

NEC 61XR3 review

NEC's first range to focus solely on the consumer, the 61XR3 nevertheless stumbles by omitting an RGB Scart input -- something of a necessity for UK users. However, its ability to make standard DVD pictures look their best is unsurpassed in the plasma...

Sheer size ; Picture quality with regular sources ; Colour reproduction ; High definition capability

No Scart input ; High-definition images are a bit noisy ; Speakers aren't very loud

The aural experience is perhaps not as important because the speakers are not included as standard. They provided a good amount of detail, but didn't go very loud. Spend your money on a home-cinema system instead
