Panasonic Viera TC-P65S1

Reproduces deep black levels and excellent shadow detail; solid color saturation; adequate connectivity with three HDMI and two component-video inputs; relatively efficient for a big-screen plasma.

Less-accurate primary colors and color temperature; skimpy picture controls; uses more power than comparable LCDs

Excellent picture quality for the money makes the Panasonic TC-PS1 plasma the best value among large-screen flat panels.

Panasonic Viera TC-P46S1

Plasma once dominated in the 46-inch flat-screen category because LCD panels that size were far more expensive. That's changed--the differences aren't as large as they once were--but Panasonic continues to compete with plasma sets such as the 1080p...

Lots of customization options ; Well priced for a 46-inch plasma HDTV

Disappointing image quality ; Skimpy on inputs (and no PC support)

The Panasonic TC-P46S1 would be a bargain 46-inch plasma if its image quality wasn't so disappointing.

Panasonic TC-P42S1 Plasma HDTV Review - Intro

Available for about $840, the TC-P42S1 is well priced for a 42-inch Plasma. But it has some problems that make it a less than stellar pick, with problems rendering blacks and whites together and trailing on fast-moving images.

Facing competition from LCD HDTVs, the price of plasma TVs has been falling recently. And the LC-P42S1 is a good example of this: it is very well priced for a 42-inch screen at around $840. And it's a decent display for the price, but it has a number...

PCMag did not test the 65-inch Panasonic TC-P65S1 TV. We did, however, test and review the 42-inch TC-P42S1 from the same series.

Panasonic TC-P42S1

The popularity of plasma HDTVs continues to wane, but Panasonic's new display technology may give shoppers reason to reconsider. The company claims the updated panel on its 42-inch TC-P42S1 ($1,099.95 list) maintains perfect picture detail no matter...

Good value. Bright, detailed picture. Energy-efficient, especially for a plasma set

Mediocre upconversion. Poorly optimized cinema picture preset

Panasonic's affordable TC-P42S1 42-inch plasma features improved energy efficiency, but it struggles with upconversion.

Panasonic Viera TC-P42S1

Older plasma displays are notorious energy hogs compared to LCD panels. Walk by one that's been on for a few hours and it almost feels like a Vermont wood stove in January. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but owners know they do convert quite a bit of...

Excellent black levels; picture quality tops 1080p LCDs; anti-reflection filter works very well; decent stereo sound

Could use another HDMI input; saves power but still not as efficient at LCD displays; simulated surround is terrible; non-swiveling stand

Although we have some minor issues with the TC-P42S1, you'll really like this one for movies and HDTV sports.

Product Specifications

Panasonic TC-54PS14 features 600Hz sub-field drive. 600Hz technology lets you view superb full-HD motion and still images with 1,080 lines of resolution. For even greater clarity with motion images, Panasonic uses its own unique image-analysis technology. This technology converts the motion in each scene into data. And each frame is practically displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous systems, to reduce aftereffects. Panasonic TC-54PS14 features VIERA image viewer. It's easy to view full-HD images with the SD card slot. Watch and show your photos right after you take them. Simply insert an SD card into VIERA to display photos on the large screen. You can also choose from among 3 types of background music and 4 display effects. It's much more fun when you can view them on a large-screen HDTV with family and friends in 1920 x 1080 pixel high definition and a wide 16:9 aspect ratio. VIERA Link allows interconnected operation of various AV devices using only the VIERA remote control, by simply connecting the devices to each other by an HDMI cable. VIERA recreates the unique atmosphere of movie images. Enjoy cinema quality in your own home. The images that are recorded onto movie film at 24 frames per second (fps) are reproduced at four times that speed by 24p cinematic playback. This achieves film like reproduction than 2:3 pull down method.
