Review: Philips Ambilight 42PF9631D Plasma TV

Is that the Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this latitude? Localized entirely in my living room? No wait; it's just the ethereal...

Crisp 1024 x768-pixel resolution. Responsive light sensor dimming. Picture-in-picture is a snap. Intuitive remote. Plenty of resizing options. MP3 and slideshow compatible via USB. Color tweaking out the wazoo. Ambilight effect + HD Content = orgasmic...

Confusing menus. Included stand is nerve-wrackingly flimsy. Only composite cables included. Light on A/V inputs. Smart Picture Control too fidgety. Poor quality speakers. Ambilight heft + stairs = hernia

Performance

Philips 37PF9631D

Built-in backlighting can help reduce eyestrain; produced a deep color of black; uniform picture across the screen with wide viewing angle; attractive design.

Inaccurate color; only one HDMI input and no dedicated PC input; cannot change aspect ratios with HD sources; no independent input memories; side-mounted speakers increase width.

With a built-in backlight, attractive looks, and a decent picture, the Philips 37PF9631D makes a case for spending a bit more.

Philips 42PF9631D

With its wide black bezel, silvery speakers, and semitransparent stand, the Philips 42PF9631D 42-inch plasma HDTV is a graceful and imposing presence. If you walk around the unit, you'll find more to admire: well-chosen, easy-to-reach inputs and...

Good screen; Ambilight adds interest Responsive, intuitive remote

No CableCard slot

It's worth reiterating that this price of $2399 is list; the 42PF9631D wasn't available for sale on our pricing date of 6/6/06. Street prices are often lower--sometimes substantially lower--than list prices. If you're interested in the 42PF9631 but are...

Philips 37 PF 9641 D/10

Great full black - something few LCDs can manage., A good factory setup always helps - the Philips 37 PF 9641 D/10's picture is well balanced., Rich feature-set, including integrated wall lighting

Absurd - the sharpness enhancement actually reduces picture detail., There is no picture format button on the remote., The colors could be more neutral

Philips 32PF9631D

The Philips 32PF9631D is a 32in LCD TV with a native resolution of 1366x768. We tested the unit's standard definition and high definition playback and...

Excellent high definition performance, reasonable DVD playback, attractive design, Ambilight and Pixel Plus features

Overly complex connection options, some minor noise in our HD and SD tests

If you're in the market for a good all-round unit, the Philips 32PF9531/79 will fit the bill nicely.

Philips 50PF9631D 50in plasma TV

A 50in Plasma from Philips for under two grand! Is it too good to be true?

Philips 32PF9641D 32in LCD TV

Philips doesn't only produce great high-end TVs, its mid-range models are also worth shouting about.

Whatever philosophical doubts we may have about Philips’ current TV policy from a branding point of view, if it keeps resulting in TVs as good for their money as the 32PF9641D, from a punter’s perspective we'll have no problems with it whatsoever!

Philips 32PF9641D review

Price, function and performance in perfect balance

Impressive pictures ; Features galore

SD sources can look slightly grainy

Next to most other TVs in its price bracket the 32PF9641D is an outstanding effort

Philips 50PF9631D review

Close, but this 50-inch plasma is not quite right

Ambilight a very nice touch ; Great audio ; Good list of features

Picture flaws with high-def material

Not bad at all but there are issues here that hold this TV back from badge success
