Philips 46PFL9706T review

Philips can usually be depended on to deliver a genuine innovation or two with every new range of TVs. But this year it's outdone itself by introducing the first commercially-released TV equipped with a Moth Eye filter. The TV in question is the...

Stunning 2D picture quality; lovely design; massive feature count; good sound quality

Costly for a 46in TV; crosstalk with 3D; take care with the screen

Philips 46PFL9706 - Pocket-lint

Is your living room ready for an insect invasion? Hugely expensive and boasting some unique tech, the headline act on this 46-inch 3D LED backlit LCD TV

Design, sharpness, profound black & white, brighter 3D pictures, extended Ambilight effect

High cost, lacklustre Smart TV dimension, speakers are in desktop stand

Philips 9000 series has been at the top of the telly tree for some years, but with this Moth Eye marvel it leaps up any few more branches.

Philips 46PFL9706H review

Is this the greatest LCD TV ever built? This moth eye filter says it is

Lovely design ; Outstanding 2D picture ; Decent sound quality ; Huge array of features ; Multimedia support ; Ambilight

Expensive ; Tricky to set-up ; Crosstalk with 3D

As well as being the long-awaited first TV from Philips' 2011 (just!) range, the 46-inch 46PFL9706H also happens to be the only TV from that range - indeed, the only set in the world, as far as we know - that uses a Moth Eye filter.

Philips 46PFL9706 review

Philips' Net TV portal is an basic affair, but at least includes BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Acetrax and Vimeo. File playback from USB is more polished, with all key video file types playable. You can't play MKV files on the 46PFL9706 from a NAS though....

Buying a 46PFL9706 is a bit like adopting a puppy from the RSPCA. Owning one is uniquely rewarding, but requires a lot of effort. The TV’s Ambilight system is terrific, and picture quality can be outstanding, but there are issues regarding the Moth Eye...

Philips 46PFL9706

Class-leading black levels and contrast, stylish design, pin-sharp images, lots of features and picture options, BBC iPlayer

Unintuitive menus, tricky to set-up, slight motion and 3D issues, expensive

One of the best Philips flatscreens ever, but there’s still room for improvement

Philips 46PFL9706T

Philips finally coughs up the world's first TV to use a moth-eye filter. And the results give us a new-found respect for our fluttery night-time friends.

Stunning 2D pictures ; Moth-eye filter is awesome ; Beautifully designed and built

Crosstalk with 3D ; It's expensive for a 46in TV ; Care must be taken with TV's processing settings

European 3D TV 2011-2012 - Philips 46PFL9706

Philips takes a giant step forward with the sleek 46PFL9706 promoting it to the position of the best 3D television on the market today. Left to right image crosstalk, an annoying characteristic with active 3D, is reduced to a level you hardly notice...

Philips 46PFL9706T 46in 3D smart TV

Review Philips TVs have long been synonymous with technical ingenuity. From an evangelical support of HD Mac and PAL Plus, through to the launch of 21:9, the brand has never shied away from pushing the televisual envelope. At least in the short term,...

Overall, the 46PFL970T can be filed under technically adventurous but not entirely practical. That the moth eye filter works is not in doubt, but it clearly comes at a cost. £2,200 is a phenomenal price for a 46in TV, even one capable of blisteringly...
