Philips 32PF5520D

On paper the Philips 32PF5520 looks like a winner with both a digital tuner and HD Ready badge and all at a reasonable price. But without Pixel Plus, will its pictures be good enough?

HD ready

Average pictures and sound, Miserly connectivity

Lack of black level is another problem. Dark picture areas bottom out into grey murkiness more readily than most, making pictures seem flatter, more lifeless and lacking in background detail

Philips 26PF5520D 26inch HD ready LCD TV

Philips' 26PF5520D is labelled 'HD-Ready' and has a digital TV tuner - but you wouldn't think so when you look at its attractive price.

Purely as a screen for the current Xbox - and taking into account its low price - the 26PF5520 seems a great option. But versatility isn't its strongest suit

Philips 32PF5520D 32in LCD TV

This TV may have been around a while, but the recent price drop could make it worth a look.

The answer to this apparent conundrum lies in adaptors included in the 32PF5520D’s packaging. With these it’s possible to get both analogue PC and high definition component video feeds into the TV via the DVI jack.

Philips 26PF5520D review

A great-value LCD TV, which thanks to Freeview integration and high-definition compatibility won't have to be upgraded for some time to come. While picture performance would benefit from Philips' Pixel Plus 2, this is a mid-range model intended for the...

Connectivity ; Features ; High-definition compatibility

Confusing remote control ; Component inputs shared with VGA

The speakers can reach a loud volume without distortion, making them acceptable for Freeview music channels and digital radio. The Virtual Dolby Surround mode should be avoided, and if you have an AV amplifier or home cinema system, you should hook up...

Philips 32PF5520D/79 32-inch LCD television

Philips 32PF5520D is a decent performer with some notable pluses (such as its built-in digital tuner), but for a mid-range offering its price of AU$3699 puts it perilously close to the high-end models of players like LG and Sony.

Built in digital tuner ; HDMI input ; Simple, stylish design ; Visibly sharp picture

Only one component input ; Black levels a tad underwhelming ; Colours can appear oversaturated

The 32-inch space is a hotly contested one in LCD televisions at the moment, with plenty of offerings from all of the major manufacturers. Philips 32PF5520D is a decent performer with some notable pluses (such as its built-in digital tuner), but for a...

"Great picture, but I would like more sound volume."

Bought the set for its PIP, to mix analogue/digital, only to find it can't be done (correct me if I'm wrong). I plan to use a HD box later; meantime very happy with integrated sd unit.
