Old Faithful

Good old Philips, still maintaining the type of QC that we'd expect from a large-scale, quality manufacturer. Unlike their large Japanese 4-lettered counterpart which starts with an S and ends in a Y and it's not sorry since you'd never hear the word from their mouths. These crooks have sold me two of the most expensive rear projection 'lava-lamps' ever made and will not offer the level of warranty support here in Europe as they're forced to by our letigious brethren across the pond.

Philips 42PF5521D

The Panasonic is cheap but it is hampered by several unpleasant flaws

Attractive price

Picture colour tones, Black level response

Also very disappointing is the 42PF5521D's black level response, which leaves shadowy areas of the picture looking hollow and dark backdrops looking grey rather than black. As Larry (Ben Stiller) confronts Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) about the...

Philips 32PF5521D

The Philips' soundstage enjoys plenty of width and depth, and vocals sound quite clear and pronounced

So many features, Excellent picture quality, Image processing miles ahead

Slight backlight seepage on our sample, Setup needs care, Not exactly cheap

As soon as you switch the TV on, for instance, coloured light radiates from its rear sides, revealing the presence of Philips' Ambilight technology. This can make viewing more relaxing (honestly, it really can) by using built-in fluorescent tubes to...

Philips 26PF5521D

The 26PF5521D is quite attractively designed, retaining the glossy, black screen frame finish of sets further up Philips' current range

Picture-in-picture options, Integral Freeview tuner

Black levels, No analogue PC input, Slightly feeble sound

If you're looking for a second room TV, likely to be fed predominantly a diet of daytime TV shows, the 26PF5521D is just about worth considering. But if you want something for heavy gaming or film use, those black level issues may prove tough to stomach

Philips 42PF5521D 42in plasma TV

A 42 in plasma for £650? Bargain? Um, no.

Once upon a time many years ago the 42PF5521D’s performance might have been acceptable on a budget product. But today, with new plasmas from Panasonic and especially Pioneer setting new performance benchmarks on what feels like an almost weekly basis,...

Philips 37PF5521D 37in LCD TV

Has Philips produced the LCD bargain of the year, or do you get what you pay for?

We perfectly understand that Philips has had to make compromises with the 37PF5521D to hit its eye-catchingly low price point. The problem is simply that the compromises affect performance too deeply to make the TV an easy recommendation, especially if...

Philips 42PF5521D

And so to our plasma contender - a TV which, at just ?800, is comfortably the cheapest set in this group test. But, um, actually the price doesn't seem all that surprising when you see the 42PF5521D in action?

Very cheap, standard definition pictures OK

Average black levels, below par colours, dithering over skin tones

Philips 26PF5521D

Costing just ?700, the 26PF5521D is one of the lower-end models in Philips' currently vast LCD range. But that doesn't stop it from looking very tidy with its slender black screen frame and contrasting silver speakers.

Twin HDMIs, good price, bright colours

Fairly significant black level problems, average sonics
