Philips 40PFL9705 review

Can a TV be considered high-end if it has no Freeview HD tuner? Clocking in at just shy of £2000, Philips' latest may lack the latest free high-def TV channels, but combines 3D and pin-sharp Blu-ray pictures with Ambilight and Net TV to create a...

No Freeview HD, too small for 3D, crosstalk, high price

There’s no Freeview HD or built-in 3D, but armed with a 3D transmitter and a quite brilliant SD upscaler, this delectable high-end LED-backlit TV proves that there’s no match for careful picture processing and high-end build quality

Philips 46PFL9705H

This TV offers the best 3D we have seen to date

Stellar 2D pictures; Sumptuous design; Terrific sound quality; Massive feature list; Excellent multimedia tools

Complicated to use; Not cheap for a 46-inch TV; Crosstalk noise compared to plasma

The 3D capabilities represent only a small fraction of the 46PFL9705H's features: it's stuffed to bursting point with multimedia tools, including open internet browsing

The ambilight halo has been extended to the top of the screen for a more immersive effect

Stunning picture quality; Ambilight works a treat; Nice looking and well-built; Excellent sound quality; Outstanding multimedia capabiilty

No 3D compatibility; Extremely expensive for a 32in TV; Complicated to use

Available in 32-inch, 37-inch, 40-inch and 46-inch options, these feature edge-LED lighting, online TV services, Ambilight and Philips' Pixel Precise processing

Philips 46PFL9705H review

This direct LED TV is the first 3D-capable model I've seen from Philips, and it's also the first active 3D LCD TV to convince me that LCD tech might eventually conquer its crosstalk nemesis.

Stellar 2D pictures; the least crosstalk we’ve seen with 3D from an LCD TV; well built; attractive

No Freeview HD; processing tools need careful use ; Performance: 5/5 ; Design: 5/5 ; Features: 4/5 ; Overall: 4/5

Philips 40PFL9705H

Yes, it's flawed. Yes, it's fiddly. But thankfully Philips' 40PFL9705H is nonetheless pretty damn great if you treat it right.

Stunning 2D performance ; Superb sound ; Exceptional multimedia talents

A little crosstalk with 3D ; Haloing with off-axis viewing ; Demands continual effort to get the best from it

The 40PFL9705H won’t be for every one. Its relatively high price, lack of a Freeview HD tuner and rather demanding nature see to that. But if you can get past these initial 'barriers to entry', we're confident that you will end up falling hook, line...

Perfect Pixel HD engine. Perfect Natural Motion. Perfect Contrast. Perfect Colours. How much perfection can one humble television incorporate?

When it’s good, it’s very very good. But when it’s bad it's horrid

Philips 9000 (46PFL9705H/12) review

The classy 46-inch Philips 46PFL9705H/12 produces some startling pictures and has top-notch sonics, but the LED TV's line-up of Internet services is weak and it lacks an HD tuner.

Deep black levels ; Rich, natural colours ; Excellent picture processing

Poor Internet features ; No HD tuner ; Pricey

The Philips 46PFL9705H/12 puts in an impressive performance in terms of both picture and sound. It's also one of the best LCD screens out there when it comes to 3D. In saying that, we're not fans of its convoluted menu system and, given the high price,...

Philips 40PFL9705H

This premium LED-backlit panel shines with its overall deep blacks and performs reasonably well in 3D, too.

Sharp and vibrant pictures; good 3D depth; powerful sound; integrated Wi-Fi; Web browsing function

Moderate crosstalk; offscreen flicker in 3D under room lighting; no 2D-to-3D support; occasional motion artifacts; does not play a video file if soundtrack is not supported

The Philips 40PFL9705H delivers deep blacks and rich features, but exhibits the same moderate crosstalk issue faced by most LED-lit 3D TVs.

Philips 9705H

Philips' new European flagship is called 9705H and in a review we will take a look at this innovative LCD-TV with LED local dimming, 400Hz, and scanning backlights. Basically the most advanced picture technology from a LCD-TV today. Philips 9705H...

Fantastic black level; Response time and scanning backlights; Inputs pointing down or to the side; No clouding at all; SD and HD picture quality; No reflections; ; ; Good speakers

Standard settings; Minor overdrive trailing; Halos from local dimming; Internet browser not very good; Oversaturated colors ; Too much 3D crosstalk

Philips new high-end model, 9705H, has a range of multimedia features but we have come to the same conclusion as in the Philips 8605H review. The DLNA and USB functionality is quite good. The NET TV internet services are too limited and the internet...
