Rear

Innovating is never easy. Most rear-projection televisions (RPTVs) that use Texas Instruments' Digital Light Processor (DLP) are single-chip designs that generate color through the use of a spinning color wheel. The problem is that these wheels can...

Fast start-up. Has fewer of the common DLP-related rainbow image artifacts. Good video processor performance.

Not as bright as lamp-driven models. Poor default color accuracy. Excessive power consumption in standby mode.

The Samsung HL-S5679W's use of LEDs as a light source hints at potential image-quality improvements, but this first effort falls short in color accuracy and brightness.

Samsung HL-S5679W DLP HDTV

A little less than a year ago, a predecessor to this TV competed in one of our Face Offs with five other RPTVs. It didn't do well. Despite the fact that it posted some of the best measurements of the group (including the most accurate color points and...

Samsung's Slightly Improved DLP TV

The HLS-5679w is the company's early effort to master LED technology, but there are still some kinks to be worked out.

I'm not a fan of high-definition televisions made with Texas Instruments' DLP (digital light processing) rear-projection microdisplay technology. It's not because of the images they produce or their price, but mainly because cramped big-city living...

The HL-S5679W picks up the 3:2 sequence very quickly on all 480i sources, both synthetic (Silicon Optix's HQV Benchmark) and real (Gladiator). With a prerelease copy of the HD HQV Benchmark, and using the Toshiba HD-XA1, the HL-S5679W correctly...

Samsung HL-S5679W DLP Rear Projection Television

But the Samsung is different. It's the first microdisplay rear projection set to do away with a projection lamp. Instead, its light source is based on high output light emitting diodes, or LEDs. This cutting edge feature is one reason this 56" set is...

Test Bench: Samsung HL-S5679W 56-inch LED DLP HDTV

That's outstanding performance, although a considerable degree of color decoder error (-20% red and -10% green) showed up in Movie Mode via the HDMI and component-video inputs. Color points, which describe the accuracy of the red, green, and blue...

Samsung HL-S5679W DLP Rear Projection Television

A casual glance at the Samsung HL-S5679 rear projection television might suggest that it is just another new 1080p set. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but the market is now flooded with them. Some are indifferent, some are good, and a very...

Trend-setting color accuracy, Crisply detailed picture, Precise, but complex, service menu adjustments

Poor black levels, Some pincushion distortion, Common control settings are tedious to access in the on-screen menus

Great value for this size and build quality

I ordered this TV on-line.

Beautiful picture when watching DVDs and HD OTA channels. Long bulb life with LED technology. Great price for a TV this size. Looks good even when TV is off. TV guide feature is great.

Takes time to change channel with the remote. Need to calibrate to get the best picture. Poor SD picture quality. Limited viewing angle.
