Samsung PN51F8500

Amid the hubbub about Panasonic's financial trouble and questions about how it will affect the future of plasma TV , it's easy to forget about Samsung. The world's No. 1 TV maker has invested substantially in plasma research and production, and has...

The Samsung PNF8500 series exhibits outstanding picture quality with a class-leading bright-room image, exceedingly deep black levels, very good shadow detail, highly accurate colors and superb off-angle and uniformity characteristics; mind-boggling...

Extremely expensive; correct film cadence requires sacrificing some black level; remote lacks numerous direct commands; imperfect cable box control; consumes more power than LCD TVs.

Samsung's best-performing TV ever, the PNF8500 series pushes the plasma picture quality envelope, especially in bright rooms.

Samsung PN51F8500 Review

Models in Samsung F8500 series

Stunning black levels ; Great shadow detail ; Brightest plasma yet ; Spectacular color ; Attractive design

Expensive ; Over-featured ; Steep learning curve

The F8500 plasma is one of those TVs that you don’t want to miss out on purchasing now, or you’ll be regretting it for years to come. It’s just that good.

Samsung plasma series 8 PS51F8500ST review

The feature set is a mirror of the brand's high-end LED models, and features twin terrestrial and satellite tuners, opening the door to some nice second screen applications.

Overall, we rate the PS51F8500ST as a class act. There are some minor niggles, and the price is certainly high, but its over performance is polished and as a connected proposition this plasma positively shines

Samsung PS51F8500

Samsung piles the heat on Panasonic with this stellar 51-inch plasma TV.

Spectacular picture quality ; Remarkably sophisticated Smart TV engine ; Loads of video streaming apps

Minor brightness instability during dark scenes ; Smart interface can be a bit confusing at times ; Minor motion fizzing with brightness levels set high

To see how the PS51F8500 pictures hold up, however, head to the next page.

Samsung PS51F8500 review

The improved voice and motion control features still aren't very useable, but the Samsung PS51F8500's smart TV system is excellent, and picture quality is so impressive it's now largely on a par with Panasonic's highly regarded VT series. All in all,...

Bright, dynamic pictures across both 2D and 3D sources ; Excellent smart TV features ; Deep black levels ; Good audio quality

Motion and voice control features still aren’t really worth having ; Upscaling could be better

Motion and voice control features remain underwhelming, but the Samsung PS51F850 is still an excellent TV. Panasonic's VT65 has better picture presets and cleaner upscaling of standard-definition broadcasts, but thanks to its deep black levels, bright...

Samsung PS51F8500

The Samsung PS51F8500 is a top-class plasma TV: it isn't cheap – but you get what you pay for

Terrific picture packed with fine detail and strong contrasts ; Natural colour palette ; Strong blacks ; Impressive range of features ; Decent sound

Voice and gesture controls still frustrate ; Some rivals produce a more overtly impressive picture

"Remote won't work and service at Samsung not reliable."

Called support center and was told the TV needs a software upgrade and was told it would take 2 to 6 weeks for each update to come in the mail. It's been over a month now and the last time I spoke with someone about this they said they would call back...

Great picture, great performance

Remote won't turn tv on at all. That is all I use it for as Samsung will not allow other universal remotes to turn their product on. Now I have to reach behind to turn it on and off feels like 1960 in 2014.
