New Sony BRAVIA

Getting Sony to send us TVs to review these days is like pulling hen's teeth. So you can imagine our surprise when finally we opened the door to a courier last week to find him looking seriously cheesed off to be carrying not just any Sony TV, but a...

A 'gamer' television

At first, I needed to get used to the new format compared to my old CRT tube. After a few weeks, we are finally getting used to it. The look distance is around 3.5 / 4 meters. The installation was very easy and done in an hour. The sound is neither...

Sony KDL40W4500 HDTV

Sony Bravia KDL-52W4500 52in LCDTV

Sony impressed us with the KDL-40W4000, so does this Bravia 52in LCD TV live up to expectations?

The 52W4500 is arguably better placed to work as a ‘picture frame' than the Samsung, too, on account of its use of LCD rather than plasma technology. After all, LCD doesn't suffer from any significant screen burn issues.

Stuff magazine

If you're after detail and contrast rather than whiz-bang features, Sony thinks it has the answer with this 46in set. We'll be the judges of that...

Sony Bravia KDL-52W4500 review

What initially looks like being a spectacular success for Sony ultimately turns into a quality-control nightmare, thanks to the appearance of some horribly overt pools of light during dark scenes. Apparently these don't appear on all 52W4500 TVs, but...

Well designed and built ; Great sharpness and brightness ; Good motion handling ; Multimedia connectivity

Dark scenes are badly blighted by backlight seepage issues ; Only three HDMIs ; Occasional grain with HD

Conclusion When it's good, the 52W4500 is very good. But when it's bad, as our sample was during dark scenes, it's so bad you have to wonder how it slipped through Sony's quality-control department. Sure, if you're lucky you might order a 52W4500 and...

The 'W4500 is as impressive now as when we first saw it - it's much cheaper, too

Unbeatable combination of deep blacks and punchy whites ; stunning detail, particularly with Blu-ray ; excellent motion

It needs care in calibration to truly impress

Sony KDL-40W4500

We didn't think that Sony's flatscreen TVs could get much better, but the 40W4500 has proved us wrong. It's a stunning TV
