LG LCD Fernseher 32LC45

This LG LCD TV puts in a strong picture performance

Classy design ; Great pictures ; Easy setup

Backlight issues ; Not a very dynamic set

The only real problems with a generally highly enjoyable performance are a dose of the usual LCD motion judders and an occasional slightly weedy black level performance, due in part to a rather intrusive backlight

Finlux 26FLD760

Build quality may not be all that, but the Finlux has other features up its sleeve

Cheap ; Decent pictures

Awful remote ; Dodgy build quality

Purists might find the picture a little crude in some ways (movement can be pretty jerky and blacks lack presence), but generally speaking, this is a competent set for a reasonable price

Planar PD420

The PD420 is commendably easy to use, considering its complexity

High-resolution pictures ; Flexible ; Can work as AV switchbox

Needs calibration to look its best, the monitor configuration may not suit all

Final tricks worthy of mention include a hard-coated, anti-glare surface, an exceptionally robust, diamond-polished, brushed aluminium finish, high-definition picture in picture and 1080p/24fps support, plus extreme picture adjustment flexibility

Humax LGB-19DZT

The retro LCD's buttons and connections are conveniently placed

Good quality audio ; Cheap ; Deals well with HD

Pictures are prone to motion blur

Our main criticisms are that pictures look soft and there are some motion smearing problems. Natural history programmes can reveal average black levels and pictures lacking in sharpness

Humax LGB-32DST

â--This bargain HDTV will be more than welcome in any home preparing for the digital switchoverâ--

Affordable price ; Great audio ; Impressive HD performance

Poor black levels ; Noisy Freeview pictures ; Some motion judder

It's designed to help you watch digital TV channels through a home cinema system, but it can just as well be used to route audio from everything attached to the LGB32-DST

Hitachi P50XR01 50" Plasma TV

â--The combination of hard disk drive for recording programmes and two digital tuners almost makes this TV uniqueâ--

250GB hard drive ; Two digital tuners ; Great motion handling

Pricey ; Bulky

All built-in, this kind of capability does comes at an aesthetic cost, however. The P50XR01 is pretty bulky, though it's worth bearing in mind that its special skills do save you the hassle of attaching an external digibox or DVD/HDD recorder

Philips PFL9632 Series LCD TV (32",37",42",47",52")

The Philips 52PFL9632D manages to elevate hi-def's glorious pictures to new levels of enjoyment

Ambilight ; impressive connectivity and feature count

Processing makes pictures flat and artificial

Many new LCD TVs are now using similar technology, but Philips' implementation seems a notch higher than its rivals', as moving objects remain cleaner and sharper than we've seen before, and there is no smearing evident over fast-moving shots

Hannspree Xv Series TVs

The Hannspree XV32 GT is far more attractive than the majority of cheap screens currently available

Bright and detailed pictures ; Bargain price

Not Full HD ; Motion and black levels issues ; Poor audio quality

There's no automatic backlight adjustment for black level optimisation, as sported by many more expensive TVs these days. But the screen's native contrast ratio is quoted at a respectable 1,200:1 all the same, and the lack of auto backlight adjustment ...

Sony Bravia KDL-W3000 Series LCD TV (40",46",52")

Sony's latest Bravia is as uncompromisingly solid as it is minimalistically attractive

What's more, we occasionally spotted a curious tinge of purple in some dark areas when we set the backlight any higher than its low -1- level

Sanyo CE47FD51-B

It's really satisfying to find a Full HD pixel count at such a relatively low price

Well built ; Attractive price ; Deals well with HD content

Poor black levels ; Lacklustre audio

It also doesn't help that the screen isn't much cop at bringing out subtle background shadow details that give pictures a sense of depth. Much of the extraordinary detailing present during the fight scenes between Kong and the T-Rex remain unseen
