Toshiba 40RL953 review

This mid-range Freeview HD screen is no triumph for Toshiba

Attractive design ; Decent on-demand service ; Good selection of picture tools ; Broad USB multimedia compatibility

Soft Freeview pics ; Occasional judder ; Beast of a remote control ; Toshiba Places needs to grow

After successfully playing smart TV catchup with some of its more innovative rivals and increasing its television sales by over 30 per cent last year, Toshiba is now aiming to consolidate its position as a dominant force at the value end of the TV market.

Good image quality, access to home network and USB input. Generally very happy with the TV

Only one USB socket, which is likely to be required for network adapter, meaning that you must disconnect from your network to access images/video from other USB sources. Factory set up too bright and garish and required some fiddling to get acceptable...

Toshiba 32RL953B

It's a mid range smart TV with full HD and Freeview HD decoder. The picture quality is about right for the money and the on-screen menues are straight forward

The fact that you have to buy a toshiba wifi dongle, which is not included as standard is infuriating. The dongle costs £30 (minimum) so factor that in when comparing prices, as most smart tv's have the wifi unit built in. You cannot use a cheap (£3-4)...

Fantastic picture enjoy all the be channels via freeview. Sound is tinny but if like me playing sound through home cinema this is irrelevant. Overall great buy and good value for money

Good picture, narrow frame. Quite easy to set up

Remote control is "different" from ones I was used to. It has "lots" of buttons. Similarly, the channel guide takes a bit of getting used to. I haven't yet tried some of the features, such as recording to an external hard drive

Nice picture, slim design

Incredibly limited in terms of being a 'smart tv ; Not ideal if you want this for internet connectivity, Netflix, Lovefilm - only access to BBC iplayer and YouTube
