Great value 2D, 3D and upscaled SD images are interrupted by a lacklustre and wired-only smart TV hub, and an all-round slow user interface that's frustrating to use.

There’s much to like about the Toshiba 40VL963. The design is slick, and the feature spread right on the money, with internet added access. But there are caveats too: Toshiba Places is an unsatisfying source of IPTV, network media playback is useless...

Not a pack leader, but worthy of being on your shortlist

Picture quality, DVD upscaling and passive 3D are unfussy and smooth; plenty of features

Could do with subtler details; contrast not perfect; not the best interface

The Toshiba 42VL963 may not yet be leading the pack in terms of performance, but it’s a good set at a reasonable price with plenty of attractive features – and as such, it’s well worth a place on your shortlist.
