Are those bland looks just a cover for hidden talents?

Toshiba 37RL853B review

A decent mid-range 37-inch LCD TV with Freeview HD and a bucketful of picture adjustment options

Impressive HD pictures ; Resolution+ upscaler ; iPlayer works well ; Versatile picture adjustment ; Decent Freeview EPG

Bland user interface ; Thin sound ; Flakey DLNA ; Awkward remote control ; AutoView backlight too aggressive

The remote control, user interface, networking features and even the ability to make so many picture adjustments give you the feeling that the 37RL853 feels more like an engineering sample rather than the polished article.

Toshiba 42RL853 review

Earlier this year, Toshiba announced a slew of upmarket 3D-ready TVs. Dressed in togas, and liberally invoking the god Bacchus, the brand's senior executives took over the Italian film set used to make Rome, the BBC/HBO co-production, and proclaimed...

Resolution+ adds detail to SD sources; BCC iPlayer and YouTube integration

Poor motion resolution; only streamed MPEGs from our network ; Performance: 3/5 ; Sound: 3/5 ; Features: 3/5 ; Overall: 3/5

This great bargain option in Toshiba's 2011 TV range ups the feature count of previous models.

Remarkably good value ; Good feature count for the money ; Bright, punchy pictures

Online features not very expansive ; Black level response ; Thin audio

It should be noted, though, that these three Internet services are ‘stand alones’, accessed directly from the 42RL853’s onscreen menus, rather than being part of a wider online ‘Smart TV’ system. To get access to such a system on a Toshiba TV, you’ll...

Toshiba Regza RL (32RL853) review

The Toshiba Regza RL is a decent mid-range TV that offers up warm and detailed HD and SD pictures, but its Internet and media-streaming features are sadly second-rate.

Slick design ; Rich, warm colours ; Good contrast performance ; Well-designed EPG

Poor Internet and media-streaming features ; Plasticky remote ; Tinny sound from the speakers

On the whole, the 853 is a good mid-range set. It has a slick design, a sharp EPG and crisp, warm HD pictures. Apart from the iPlayer app, however, the rest of its Internet and media streaming features leave much to be desired.

Toshiba Regza 42RL853 42in LED TV
