HARDWARE REVIEW: Toshiba 42RL853

Toshiba's 42RL853 is tailor-made for the mainstream, says Steve May. But that doesn't preclude a few surprises

Resolution+ adds detail to SD sources; BCC iPlayer and YouTube integration

Poor motion resolution; only streamed MPEGs from our network

Overall, the 41RL853 can be considered reasonable value and a presentable proposition for penny-pinchers, even if it lacks the sex appeal (and ‘net smarts) of Toshiba’s incoming elite.

Are those bland looks just a cover for hidden talents?

Toshiba 42RL853

This great bargain option in Toshiba's 2011 TV range ups the feature count of previous models.

Remarkably good value ; Good feature count for the money ; Bright, punchy pictures

Online features not very expansive ; Black level response ; Thin audio

The 42RL853 does enough with its features and handling of normal, day to day TV fodder to be well worth considering by anyone out to maximise their screen-size-to-budget ratio. It’s certainly a preferable option to Toshiba’s own 42HL833, and...

Toshiba Regza RL (32RL853) review

The Toshiba Regza RL is a decent mid-range TV that offers up warm and detailed HD and SD pictures, but its Internet and media-streaming features are sadly second-rate.

Slick design ; Rich, warm colours ; Good contrast performance ; Well-designed EPG

Poor Internet and media-streaming features ; Plasticky remote ; Tinny sound from the speakers

On the whole, the 853 is a good mid-range set. It has a slick design, a sharp EPG and crisp, warm HD pictures. Apart from the iPlayer app, however, the rest of its Internet and media streaming features leave much to be desired.

Really good inexpensive full hd tv

This is a really good, inexpensive tv. It was easy to setup (i am a man who reads instruction books first) and easy to connect other items to. After buying this I invested in a Panasonic Blu Ray surround sound system (as Toshiba don't do them) and as I...

Dodgy sound great picture

The TV is great mounted on the wall. Good picture and then discovered that the HDMi feed does not work so no sound. A real pain as asked to return, etc. I am sure it will be sorted but you just want things to work.
